If you're considering buying in Lovettsville VA, but you work in Washington DC, there is a MARC commuter train station just across the Potomac River in Brunswick MD. Residents on the North and West sides of town usually prefer using the Brunswick station. If you happen to live on the Eastern side of Lovettsville, or in the Waterford and Taylorstown areas, there is another MARC commuter train station at Point of Rocks which will be closer and maybe more convenient. It's a good way to travel into DC to visit monuments and museums as well, even if you don't work there. You can get off at Union Station in Washington, and go from there.
In addition to the train stations, the are also public boat launches at both Brunswick and Point of Rocks. Along the river is the C&O canal towpath, where you can walk, run, and bike. There is lots of history along the way as well. http://www.bikecando.com/brunswick-md.aspx
This video is actually a freight train coming out of Harper's Ferry WV heading towards Brunswick MD.
