Who didn’t love dressing up for Halloween as a kid? Halloween is a great time of year to show off your fun side and reacquaint yourself with your neighborhood or even with the Virginia you love. Here’s how.

Most of the year, our homes are a showcase of beauty and calm; but when Halloween arrives, some folks can’t wait to break out the cobwebs and ghouls. If you aren’t ready to venture out to see haunted Virginia, get your friends and other neighborhood adults together and have a haunted house for adults.
Themes, such as The Walking Dead or classics such as The Bride of Frankenstein, appeal to the scaredy-cat in all of us. Create game and goodie stations throughout your yard with a seating area at the end of the “trail” for a nice chat to catch up with your neighbors.
Have a Classic Autumn Yard…
Not everyone goes ghoulish for All Hallows Eve. If you’re not one for fake spiders and pointy hat witches, go classy and hold a fancy dress party. Set out simple décor based on just black and white coloring and tailor your refreshments to simplicity. Try these:
- Avoid the mess with no-carve pumpkin decorating with your colors. Simple crochet doilies draped over a pumpkin and then spray-painted white or black make for an elegant look.
- Pour cocktails into classic goblets or vials. Use clear cocktails with a bit of green food coloring.
- Paint a table candelabrum black and fill with black candles.
- Use glow sticks under the ice in your drink station to give off a creepy cast.
- Choose a theme such as Game of Thrones or Downton Abbey.
Halloween is not just a time to relive our youth or enjoy the seasonal events it brings; there is an importance in the spirit of community that envelopes a neighborhood. Halloween is a perfect time to be introduced to a real understanding of your area’s atmosphere. As acquaintances grow into alliances, people watch out for each other and their families, also increasing the safety and enjoyment of the areas we live in. Let’s revel in the season and in this sense of community.
