The No. 1 Penn State men's volleyball team ovecame a powerful west coast Pepperdine team 3-1 (27-30, 33-31, 30-25, 30-23) Saturday night in Irvine, Calif., to become the first school east of the Mississippi to win an NCAA volleyball championship on the West Coast.  This is the second national championship for the men's team and they are the only non-west coast team to win the national championship in men's volleyball.

I think it is fair to say that Happy Valley is now the epicenter for collegiate volleyball after the rare feat imposed on the volleyball world by the men's and women's teams this year.  The Penn State men and women pulled off a sweep of the national championships in collegiate volleyball this year as the women won the NCAA championship in December.  This is only the second time in NCAA history that the same University won both men's and women's championships in the same year.

Congratulations to the men and women on their sweep of the volleyball world.

Tim,
Congrats to PENN State on their wins!! That's an amazing achievement....the coaching must be very good.

I'm reading Vince Lombardi's 'What It Takes to Be Number One' right now and I find it absolutely astounding what a difference a coach's attitude can make when it comes to bringing out the best in his/her team members.

Jo - It is an amazing accomplishment and the community was behind both teams as they competed to be the best.

I have read Vince Lombardi's book and he was a true inspiration.  I have his "What it takes to be Number One" speech framed in my office.  I often wonder if the men of today are "tough enough" to deal with a coach like Vince Lombardi.  Certainly in the professional leagues the players seem to set the rules unlike when Lombardi was a coach.

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the book recommendation....I'll see if my local library has it and if not they can likely find it through inter-library loan.

'What it takes to be Number One' is one of my favourite speeches of all time.
