"Open the door then get out of the way."

I was a member of a church in Irving Texas at the young age of 23.  I met a very bitter paraplegic man in bible study.  We eventually became friends and he taught me a valuable lesson and offered insight to my character.  One evening the bible class was meeting at a home outside of church.  I saw my friend and his wife pulling up in front of the house with their child.  I ran to open the door to let him in.  The doorway wasn't wide enough to fit him and me comfortably.  I sucked in my gut and helped push his chair through the door.  It was a snug fit, to say the least.  He turned to me and said, "I can tell a lot about the character of a person by the way they open the door.  Some people act as if they didn't see me coming and continue on.  Some people open the door but stand in the way and make it hard for me to maneuver.  But sometimes you get a person that will not only open the door but get the heck out of the way."  At that moment I decided not to get my feathers ruffled by him insulting my eagerness to help.  Instead, I chose to become a person to open the door and get the heck out of the way.

I am a movie buff and always seem to take the time to sit down, relax, and enjoy the latest flick.  Tonight I rented ‘MusicWithin'.  It was recommended by a ‘Newbie' real estate agent.  She said it is the best movie of the year thus far.  I will not give you her name because she went to work for a direct competitor instead of joining my office.  We will call her ‘Kim' for now but I am hoping to welcome her into my office in the near future.

As I sat and watched the movie I realized it was reflecting upon events that happened when I was ‘a baby'.  I had no idea of what disabled people went through prior to the Americans for Disabilities Act (ADA).  I certainly understood the law and concept behind it before watching the movie.  When I took the state licensing exam to obtain my real estate license it came up on one the test questions.  I never really, and probably/hopefully, will never ‘get it'.

What I did ‘get' was a sense of pride to be an American and practicing as a licensed Realtor.  While watching the movie it became very clear to me how hard life was for the disabled prior to ADA.

If you are a Realtor and fortunate enough to live in this country I want you to really think about the privileges we have.  Take into consideration that the ADA is not just an answer to the multiple choice question on your test.  Make a conscious note of what that really means, why individuals had to fight to make a law, and how you will practice it in your business every day and with every transaction.

If you haven't seen the movie rent it.  Be forewarned it has some foul language.  If you can tolerate that enough to get through the movie I think you will be moved just as I was.

BTW- It has some of the best music on the soundtrack I have ever heard.

Very nice post. We don't often talk about kindness in this business. I see kindness in you.  It helps in this business more than people realize.

All the best!

I was brought up to help my fellow man. You did the right thing to open the door for him. Just think how many people wouldn't take the time to help. These are the people that miss out on the satisfaction of helping someone. It is truly better to give than to receive. Give back in your community.

Hi Melody,

Great post.  I'm going to rent the movie.  I wish more people could at least relate to these issues.  I think we would find that more people would be more tolerant if they could relate to the issues involved.

Thanks for this post.  I will definitely make it my business to learn more about ADA.  It never really caught my mind but it has since this post.

Hi Melody,

You made me think about kindness in Real Estate so that's what I blogged about today.

Kindness in Real Estate?

I used your blog as a reference.

Thanks!

Take care.

We have made a lot of progress in the past few decades.. I think we still have a some work left to accomplish but I'm proud of where we are as a nation.   Very, very nice post, Mel.  I'll have to see if Netflix has Music Within.  I haven't even heard about it.

You Deserve The Best

Kevin- I read your post and really liked it a lot.  You are right, we do not talk about kindness enough.  I challenge you to find more 'kindness' related posts.

Shaun- I have given back to my community but admittedly not enough.  I have a family and have been wrapped up in my business for a long while.  It is a goal of mine to get back into volunteering my time.  Thank you for helping place that in the forefront of my plans.

Bill- You shouldn't have a problem finding it.  It is a new release and an independent film.

Sonya- The verbiage of the link may be a little dry.  It helps if you see the movie.  Everything is much more 'real'.  At least, for me.

Jesse- I remember seeing a preview once a few months ago.  Independent films don't have the money for much advertising.

Richard- My posts have been 'fun' thus far.  I am new to blogging and haven't 'written' anything but contracts for years.

Thanks to all of you for your positive responses.  I appreciate the friends I have made here.  Feel free to link 'like' blogs with comments.

Great message, Melody.  I doubt people would grumble about not being able to park in the primo spots if they really had a taste of what it is like to fight through just one day of being disabled.  Thank you for this post.

I will have to make a note to rent that movie. Also a very uplifting post, it is a good time to think of kindness with the market not being so kind to many, tempers are sometimes frayed!

I've known you for close to 20 years and you've always been the kind of person that opens a door regardless of whether there was a need for it.

Great reminder, Mel.  Good job!

Character...it is such an important thing.  Trials do not build character, trials expose a person's true character.  That being said, a lot was revealed about your character when you said you chose to become the person who opens the door and gets out of the way rather than take it personally. (I stand and applaud!)

If only more people would take difficult situations and learn from them rather than take offense to them, this world would be a much better place.

Some people admire celebrities, and greatly long for the chance to meet their favorites some day.  Don't count me among those people, as I long to meet people of great character above all others.  You sound like someone I would like to meet some day if the chance ever arose.  Thanks for the post!

I'll share one of my favorite sayings with you:

If you see someone without a smile, share one of yours with them!

I think we often forget how difficult it can be for people who are disabled. From reading a few of your blogs, you handle situations very well Melody!  You don't negatively react to situations. I made a note of the movie, thanks for recommending it to us.  Great post!
