Laminate flooring is a multi-layer, synthetic flooring product that simulates wood. Although there are many pros to having laminate flooring, there are several common problems that can come along with it.

Laminate Problems and How to Fix Them:

1.Peaking
Peaking is an expansion problem. Floors and walls expand and contract based on the weather, humidity and other things. When flooring expands against doorways, molding, or walls, it can buckle. This can be fixed by taking out the molding to let the floor expand and even out.

2. Water/Moisture-induced warping/buckling
Dampness, either from humidity or water, can cause laminate flooring to buckle or warp. A balancing layer can help to even out the flooring

3. Mildew, mold, and other infestations
Mildew, mold, fungus, and other things are not a simple fix, but they can be prevented. When getting your floors installed, be sure it is the temperature and humidity your home will normally be. Don’t install it on a hot, humid, summer day!

4. Chipping
Chipping can be caused by a number of things including poor installation, poor handling, bad cleaning, and many other ways. This can be fixed with acrylic or putty filler. Click this link for the step-by-step details on how to use both types of filler!

The best way to “fix” laminate flooring problems is to be extremely tedious when installing in order to prevent the problems occurring at all!

How to Clean and Shine Laminate Flooring:
The best way to clean laminate flooring is with a microfiber mop. Microfiber mops are flexible, easy to swivel around, and pick up dirt and hair well. It is best to use this because laminate warps easily when it is exposed to water.

Another way to clean laminate flooring is to purchase the manufacturer’s cleaning solution.
Make sure to never use string mops or sponge mops on your laminate flooring! These two mops will leave streaks and require water, which would damage the floor.

To shine laminate flooring, you can purchase a laminate shiner or make one yourself! Use the steps this link  it will take show you how to create your own flooring shine.

How to Make Hardwood Floors Shine:
1. Check for wax build up
If you wax your floor regularly, your floors may need to be stripped. Waxing can cause wood to dull over time. Only wax your floors one to two times a year.

2. Sweep before you mop
Always be sure to sweep and/or vacuum before you mop. Mopping a dirty floor will leave streaks, scratches and residue.

3. Find the right product
Every floor is different, so you’ll need to research what is best for your specific type of wood. Ask the manufacturer for recommendations on the best products to use.

4. Don’t use too much cleaner
Floor cleaner should not be used liberally. An overly wet wood floor can cause damage. Use small amounts of cleaner and be sure to wipe any spills off the ground as soon as possible.

5. Buff hardwood floors dry
Buffing your floors after they have been mopped will help restore shine. Use microfiber cloths or flat mop heads. THis will keep the floor from looking streaky.

Whether your flooring is laminate or hardwood, it is extremely important to take the proper precautions when installing, cleaning, and taking care of your floors.
