To DIY or Not to DIY

If you are anything like me, you love a good DIY project. There's a true sense of accomplishment when you complete a project on your own, that's what makes it so enticing. However, there is a time and a place for certain DIY projects. If you ask me, some things should be left to the professionals.

In terms of DIY projects, the occasional home project is something most homeowners take on at some point. It could be as simple as a painting a dresser by using these painting tricks, to a more involved project such as tackling a DIY shiplap wall. These are a couple of things I have personally done and felt comfortable doing. I believe the DIY project you take on is related to the level of comfort you have with the project.

Here are a few more DIYs you can tackle.

1. Painting

Painting is something homeowners can tackle on their own. Following these painting tips will help you along the way. However, depending on the size and scope of the job it may be wise to hire a professional painting company like Wow1 Day Painting.

2. Hardware

I'm not even sure if this is considered a DIY, but switching out the hardware on your cabinetry is something homeowners can handle. If you are looking to make an easy update in your kitchen, this is something you can DIY with almost no fuss.

3. Landscaping

Landscaping is something that can be tackled by the average homeowner. You may want to add a few plants to the front of your home to create curb appeal, or maybe create a vegetable garden in the back yard. Whatever you choose, this is something that isn't extremely technical and there is not much of a safety factor involved.

Now here are a few DIYs that should be left to the professionals.

1. Electrical

This is my number 1 DIY no no. Dealing with electrical is something that should 100% be left to the professionals. Safety is the top priority when it comes to your home. Yes, electrical work is expensive and it may be tempting to try to DIY some electrical work, but if you don't have the faintest idea of what you're doing then it's certainly not worth the risk.

2.Plumbing

Plumbing is something I wouldn't want to DIY. When it comes to pipes and what goes where you need to have a good handle on what you are working with.  Even if you think you can handle removing a few parts to unclog a drain, it can be confusing to put them back the way they were. You can end up causing yourself more harm than good here.

3.Roofing

You may be wondering, Who is going to DIY their roofing? Well, you'd be surprised. It's not the fact that is a hard job, it's more of a safety/danger factor. Ladders are required to access a roof and falling off the ladder is a risk. Let's just leave this one to the professionals.

4. Structural

Anything having to do with the structure of your home should be done by a  professional. Again, safety and your home not crumbling to the ground are factors here. Sure the HGTV shows make it seem so easy when they are tearing down walls, but you do not know what is lurking behind your wall and if that wall is potentially holding up your house.

Just remember, when thinking about taking on a DIY project, consider all the factors as well as how comfortable you feel doing the project. If you have any doubts let the professionals handle it. Its always better safe than sorry.

Afternoon Cate.

I don't do any of those.  I can change a light bulb, but that's about it
