Father Knows Best...???

Don't be confused by this title...It bears no resemblance at all to the 60s TV show of the same name...It's more like a 'Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus' look alike!

I understand from another post on Active Rain, that the holiday 'Father's Day' was started in 1909 by the daughter of a Civil War participant...That sounds true enough...

I would have bet big money it wasn't started by a Father somewhere...nor an older son of a father...WHY???

That's what this post is all about...

You see when a man is truly honored...he enjoys the 'pat on the back' to be sure, but rather than celebrate publicly, a man would sooner retreat to his cave and lift a couple of beers with a few friends...low key, no muss no fuss, no todo...period!

Outward shows of affection, unwrapping of gifts which will be used no sooner than next year, forced facial expressions of elation over ties and polo shirts...these are all not a natural part of a man's makeup...these are 'Venusian'...

Martian qualities would be the moments we experience holding our first child for the first time fighting back tears of joy, so as not to betray our manhood...watching with sheer delight our children achieving successes one small ladder rung at a time...recognizing a small sacrifice made by our child to improve another child's circumstances...

These are the times that make us want to run like heck to our 'caves' and shout at the top of our lungs, alone, and with no witnesses around...Thank You, Lord!!!

Fran, those things that truly delight us men and fathers are that which produces internal joy. You are one who knows all about the best things in life are free.

Fran, I've always felt bad for guys around the holidays.  Everywhere you look are these silly little gadgets, card games, multi-purpose tools.  Why are you guys so darn hard to buy for??  If you weren't we wouldn't be reduced to buying you a screwdriver than can also take the grease off the barbecue!

Barbara,

But we martians can't live without you...!!! :) Thanks,   Fran

P.S. And remember, Martian fathers have Venusian daughters and Venusian mothers have Martian sons...Viva la difference, the French say!

My Dad was very shy and quiet (he had 4 daughters!), and would even park way out of the way so we wouldn't make a spectacle when we arrived.  That never worked!

FRAN - I'm lucky to be at a stage where my son is creating cards for me with his drawings.  In school, they had them create a story by finishing sentences and drawing pictures to support the story.  It was truly special to me, and something that I will keep forever.  I don't care about getting gifts bought from a store from my kids.  Their love is all that I need.

Fran,
Thanks for this wondeful insight into the world of the male half of our species. I'm learning bit by bit to accept the 'cave' thing guys go through and really starting to understand it.  It's a 'feeling' thing, I think....right?

Great post! ...I hope you had an awesome Father's Day.

Isn't that the truth.  I think most dads would just prefer to have it as a day of rest as opposed to getting together and celebrating anything.
