Our Zoom call for January 5 was given to us by John DL Arendsen. He was on the call to teach us all about ADU's. That stands for Accessory Dwelling Units. Something that I knew nothing about, but found it very interesting.
He's also a very interesting person and began his presentation by playing us a song to help change things up and get everybody in a good mood, which, I must say that he accomplished in spades.
John told us all about the process of building an ADU from start to finish or soup to nuts (wherever did this expression come from? I digress).
This was not just a presentation, but almost a course that went into some of the detail of getting one of these done. It included whether the ADU was built on site or off site and brought in, setback issues, floor ratios or how big it could be, the style it has to or should be in, water pressure, plumbing, electrical, easements, gas - basically everything that should go into putting one of these on a property. I get winded just thinking about it all!
ADU's could especially be good to have if you have a property big enough to house one and would be good to have to possibly bring in extra income or house an extended family that you may have. Especially, older parents that you may want to be nearby to you.
Where I live and have lived, I hadn't really heard this term before. I have about Tiny Houses, but I think that this is different somehow.
I do know that this is more popular on the West Coast than the East Coast (I think).
What's funny to me is that never hearing this term before, I had someone that I'm working with in California bring it up to me shortly after I heard about this topic from John. There was one on a property that I was about to buy along with a house. If it comes to pass, you can bet that I'll be calling John to ask him about this.
John has many interesting posts on the subject of ADU's on Active Rain and if it's something that you are considering doing, I can't think of anyone that would be more knowledgable on this particular subject.
I've always believed that you can't know everything and that you should go to someone that knows a lot more than you do on that particular subject. Well, John is that person.
Talk about taking notes on this. I had to stop and figure out that it didn't make sense for me to keep taking notes when it would be easier to just call him and enlist his help. I would suggest that to you too.
I was not the only one interested in this topic. On this meeting, I believe that we had 45 people or so. What a turnout!
I highly recommend joining us. We have our call every Tuesday at 2pm EST.
