AR Questin of the Week - Blog Etiquette - What are the Rules for Updating Posts?

I have been reading on AR that it is a good idea to update old posts for several reasons.  Here are a few I have seen: 1. When you first start blogging you don't know much about key words, white space, meta tags, etc. 2.  As you progress with posting you become better at making your posts appear more appealing to readers using the AR platform  3.  You didn't realize initially you should be creating links to other posts you have done. 4. You have learned about a new HTML editior that will make your posts look much more appealing to everyone and really stand out.

Katarina did a wonderful post on Nvu. I am in love with it! My posts look so much better now and it is really easy to use and you can work offline.  So, finally, my question to the group is: What is the correct blog etiquette for reposting your old blogs?

Is it proper to redo your old posts in Nvu (or any other great editor you have learned about since joining AR ) and reposting them and deleting the old ones? Are you "double dipping" in terms of points?  Will other bloggers think you are being lazy and rather than writing new posts you are just recycling?

With the new option of having your posts also go to an outside blog it seems a wise move to make them look as good as they can but will anyone at AR have a problem with the reposting?

Thank you Katarina for all you teach the newbies at AR.  You are a God send to many of us.  Your blogs are always informative and inspirational.  I was sorry to hear about your colleague.

I actually had not thought of taking time to update older posts. Occasionally I will go back to revise posts that are still active , at least they are in my mind even if no one else is still looking at them.

Probably there have been few comments on this post because there is not much in the way of an etiquette issue over updating old posts.

Sometimes you will see that a post or a comment with keep the old text, but add a dated Update: ,  and follow with the new information.

This does not sound like what you are asking. It sound like you want to improve you older posts, with art, format, links, etc.

My recommendation is if you have posts that you think are worthy, to go update them. Then ask a friend to make a comment so the old posts are brought up in the group dating.

Links, keywords, titles, initial sentences - all will help with search engines.

Decide if your time is best spend improving an old post, or writing an excellent new post.

Now I have not heard of Nvu. On this post here, it would help for you to link the reference to the post about Nvu.

Good thoughts,

Richard

Richard: thank you so much for your thorough comment.  I went back and did an edit and put the link in to the Nvu post of Katarinas so you could check it out.  I think I will update some because I want to post them to my new outside blog and would like them to be better than the originals. Again, thank you for taking the time to help me.

Good question and something I've thought about as well. I have taken some old posts from my personal blog (different web address) and posted them on the rain just to get some new feedback and to expose the info to a wider consumer audience.  Haven't had a blog long enough to repost on the same web address though.

Heck of a good question.  I have to go find Katrina's post and the NVU link as my blogs are not too attractive.

Hopefully i'll find the nvu to be easy to use as you suggest.

Hi Diana, I just joined thia group. The learning never ends, does it? (LOL) It makes sense to only tweak the really good, older posts & spend the majority of time working on new posts.

Diana, I would definately only go back and update the posts you feel are deserving.  It wouldn't make much sense to go back and revise all posts you have ever written.  You will continue to learn how to generate more SEO for your posts, as you have stated in your post, so I would just continue to use what you learn moving forward.  One thing I would recommend is not to delete any posts just to re-write them.

Excellent question, Diana, and one that I've wondered about, too.  The comments here have been very illuminating and it doesn't sound like other bloggers have a  problem with it.  I certainly don't.
