God Bless America! An Immigrant's Declaration of Love...

I was raised in a communist, iron curtain country.  We were NOT allowed to go ANYWHERE.  The happiest moment in my life was when I arrived in the USA.  To be FREE is indeed an amazing privilege.  I have tears in my eyes as I'm writing this.

The human spirit seeks freedom.  Being able to go anywhere in the World and reading anything (our books were censored too) is indeed such an amazing opportunity.  For those born in this country, that privilege is taken for granted.  For me, it is still a privilege much revered.   I thank God every day for being here!

I am a proud American!  People ask me which country I consider mine.  What a silly question.  Like a child who is mistreated by its biological parent, then adopted by a loving parent...  there is no doubt who the REAL PARENT is:  the ADOPTIVE parent is THE PARENT!  Duh!!!

My son is a Marine officer, currently serving our country.  I am proud of him!  God Bless America!  I love this country!

This was actually a comment I had made on another blog.  It just came out and I thought it needed to be said.

Mirela, I can't imagine not living free. I'm afraid we've lost a lot of our civil liberties already, but this is still the best place to live. If it wasn't..how come so many people want to live here?

What a handsome son and beautiful daughter you have. Tell your son that this Texas family is proud that he's serving to help keep this country safe and free! Beautiful post!

Linda:  Thank you so very much!  I'll e-mail him the blog so he can see for himself.

My daughter is the one in the Lincoln memorial picture.  The blonde is actually my inherited daughter, my daughter in law, my son's wife.  The pictures were taken in '06, when my son got commissioned into the Marines.  He graduated magna cum laude from the Citadel, SC and trained for several months at Quantico, VA, before receiving his commission.

Thank you very much Linda for your heart warming comments!

Mirela, great photos of your hero officer Marine son. Isn't Washington D.C. a cool place to visit? The Lincoln Memorial is one of my favorite places.

Gary:  Thank you!  I LOVE Washington DC!

The most emotional monument I've ever seen in my life is the Vietnam War Memorial.  As I descended into it and as the wall grew, I felt this emptiness in the pit of my stomach, this restlessness and deep grief.  All those lives lost...  I cried many tears.  Me and my son were visiting it together.  We hugged in a long embrace, while I sobbed on his shoulder, knowing full well the deep sorrow left behind all those fallen heroes.   A mother's love...  a lost child...  nothing could signify life's abyss more than that.  I hope to die before losing any one of my children; I couldn't take the pain.

Mirela, WOW! I was taken back by your declaration of love! It is great that you have such powerful feelings about been an American and I salute you for it.

But as you know, I came from the same country, I am an American citizen (I hardly remember Romanian language - though I do understand when my parents use it - ) I came here when I was only 6 years old and instantly assimilate with my new life ... I love, this new country of mine, as much as you do...  but in my deepest level of soul I'll always be a Romanian girl. Over there is my first breath of air, my grandfather's smile, my memories ... I carry with me the beauty, the sound of music, the colors of country sides and sea... to the day I die.

I'll tell stories - in my late years - to my children or grandchildren, about that land so that will be not forgotten. Remember we left that country for a better life and to get out of Communism regime, But Communism  is only s social-political form of dictatorship. Country had nothing to do with it! I personally can't forget that.

For us, the first generation of immigrants, is not that simple...

Arina: I left there at 15.  I'm still fluent in Romanian.  My memories of Romania are not as good as yours.   I felt the oppression deeply.  It is a beautiful country and the people are very warm.

I too carry the beauty of it within, but I am so glad to be here!  I am still in touch with my desk mate (we sat two to a desk).  Life is still very tough there.  When I send her $ 300 - that's her salary for several months...

We are so lucky to be here!

As I read this post I thought of some of our discussions we have had back and forth and how that just wouldnt have been possible for you with out being free.... I think we all take things for granted when we have never known another way.

Please give your son a BIG thank you from me for serving his country. You must be proud, and a little scared all at the same time.

Robert:  Thank you very much for your kind words!

I am very proud of him and I do pray...  so I trust that my son will be fine.  He has been an extraordinary kid and now he is an extraordinary young man.  I am very lucky!
