Toronto is Canada's largest, populous and economic capital.
But what does the word 'toronto' mean? The term originally referred to The Narrows, a channel of water through which Lake Simcoe discharges into Lake Couchiching.
The word 'toronto' comes from the Mohawk word 'tkaronto' meaning where there are trees standing in the water.
The word 'taronto' first appeared in French map created by Abbé Claude Bernou in the 1680s. In 1695 the word 'taronto' was exchanged for the current spelling 'toronto' in 1695 by Italian cartographer Vincenzo Cronelli.
