One of the many benefits of being a resident in a township like Millburn/Short Hills is that there are many exciting sponsored events in which members of the area can participate. The Friends of the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge recently hosted a series of such events. On Saturday July 12th, the Friends and the Refuge staff sponsored a youth volunteerism event to help with a clean up project. Children and teens ages twelve and older were able to learn about painting, pruning, planting and invasive species.

The next day, Sunday July 13th, the Friends hosted a butterfly identification event. The organizers of this exciting event said that more than 70 species of butterflies can be found in the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. Participants learned about these different species of butterflies and were given the opportunity to try and identify them with butterfly experts. Following the information session, participants were able to tour the management area and tested out their new found butterfly identification skills. There was a lot of fun to be had at this exciting and educational event.
