Today for me is what most people consider "the dreaded 4-oh", but I'm flummoxed by this view of the world. I'm much more of a glass half full gal so when my partner said today, "so, did you feel any different this morning?" I knew he was showing his glass half empty side. He thinks birthdays are no big deal. Well.... I beg to differ.
Some cultures celebrate your birthday only as you get older and some religions don't celebrate birthdays at all. But, I love using this one day out of the year to see my friends. Not because I want them to fawn over me but rather because I want to have the people who are closest to me around me so that I can feel and give love to and from them.
Our lives are so harried that we don't have time for each other as much as we'd like, and frankly, as an agent I have to put other people ahead of my life all the time that it's nice to get a day to remind myself why I love and want to help people and to let my friends all know how much I care about them. During the holidays we're all with our own families so why not use your birthday to say "I love you!" to someone else.
I'm looking forward to a dinner tonight with about 15-20 of my most wonderful friends of the past 5-20 years. They are all wonderful people and I can't wait to tell them how much it means to me that they came to help celebrate not only my birthday, but my life with them in it.
