Radical

We don't watch TV in our home. We gave it up years ago in favor of something a bit more productive. We did watch the Olympics and maybe we will catch some debate stuff, but not much more. We do however watch movies on our DVD player once or twice a week. That way I can remember how to use a remote control properly.

Last month, while watching a movie, I heard something that struck me as interesting. The character in the movie was watching Jeopardy. The movie was set in the 60's so it was a 60's version of Jeopardy and it was the real deal. Probably bought from the producers just for this movie. In this Jeopardy edition, the clue was "political left". The answer was "what is a radical?".

A radical. The contestant got it in about 2 seconds. Left equals radical. How obvious. Nowadays we assign lefties names like progressive, liberal, forward thinking, etc. What happened to radical? I think it is more befitting of the group.

Well, I believe groups like the Black Panthers, Weathermen, etc., were considered "political left".  To call all those to the left radicals is like calling Muslims terrorists because certain elements have gone overboard.

Kevin ~ Now you have liberals telling you how you should consider political left. Now you can't think for yourself. The Weathermen? Isn't that the same radical liberal William Ayers, the same who OBAMA was on the board with and took money from, that he can't remember who or when? Does that make Obama a radical?

Kevin - strangely enough, I am reading the chapter regarding the radical left in Johah Goldberg's Liberal Facism. Fascinating reading, I was there and I forgot much about what he discusses. Especially enlightening are the reminders of some of the so-called heroes who really wanted, not a free, but a controlled society and believed that violence was an acceptable means for attaining it.

Actually you can have radical at both ends. According to the dictionary "radical' means someone who goes to extemes. Wouldn't the Muslim terrorists be radicals?

Leslie - it can, but for many years it was synonymous with liberal ideology (when used with politics), especially in Europe. However, in the 60's it became synonymous with groups such as SDS, Weathermen, Chicago 7, etc.

Supertramp even referenced that connection in The Logical Song

Now watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical, liberal,..........
