TIME TO GET FIT..... AGAIN

I once commented to Bob Fulton, voice of the Gamecocks, that he sure looked good after loosing so much weight. His reply surprised me. In short, he said that over the years he’s probably lost a thousand pounds. He said that he’s always trying to loose weight. That was years ago and I was very young. I now understand. Over the years, I’ve lost 30 lbs, 60 lbs, 57 lbs, 90 lbs (that was my most) and on and on. It seems like I decide to healthy up about every two years and it last about a year before slipping back into my old habits of no exercise and eating really good tasting bad stuff. It takes a good slap in the face of reality for me to decide to get back into some sort of physical condition and drop some weight. The last big weight loss was when I was diagnosed with adult, type 2 diabetes. It’s time to do it again.

My doctor, Jennifer Pulano, asked me to join her team in the MUSC Healthy Challenge. It’s similar to The Biggest Looser on TV, but most of the work is done on our own. We will be following the instructions of personal trainers, nutritionist and mentors. I am now the captain of The Access Health Care of Mt. Pleasant team. There are 8 of us and we’ve committed to win the challenge. You see, in order for me to accomplish weight loss and physical conditioning, I have to be challenged and I sure don’t want to let the team down. I’ve set a personal goal of 40 lbs of weight loss. It all starts tonight at The Wellness Center at The Medical University of South Carolina. I’m psyched. It really is fun to watch yourself shrink in size and get into a closet full of clothes that are now too tight to fit. But, the most important reason to get fit is for your health. I’m looking forward to the renewed energy. If you’re interested, I’ll keep you posted on how we are progressing over the next few months. Wish us luck.
