How Do We Measure Experience in Real Estate?

By
Real Estate Agent with RealtyUSA

As Real Estate Professionals we all may feel we are Experienced. Many of us have come from different professions and backgrounds. Some were teachers, nurses, business professionals, etc.. But does this make you an experienced agent? If your previous job was in marketing and now apply those principals to real estate, does that make you Experienced? Are you Experienced by the number of years you are in real estate? What if you have been practicing for over 20 years and have only sold 2 house per year, are you Experienced? What if you have been in real estate for only 2 years and have sold over 50 homes, are you more Experienced? Experience does come in time, but you have to be actively selling real estate during that time. Real Estate is always changing, but the basic fundamentals have not changed. Just look back in history and you will see many similarities to what is happening right now in the market. However, as a real estate professional you must adapt to new changes in the market and in technology. The agents that do not embrace and learn this new age of technology will be left on the sidelines, watching others succeed. The days of only doing open houses, mailers, and print advertising are long gone.
You must now embrace technology and brand yourself through the Internet. But that is a whole other story....

You gain Experience by being in the battlefield, presenting and negotiating offers, prospecting for new business, going on weekly listing appointments, and meeting buyers. You gain Experience through Rejection. Yes, Rejection! It will make you a better agent. You gain Experience through continued education.  Knowledge is power, especially in real estate. You become an Experienced agent by adopting and embracing education, technology, and all the other daily real estate activities.

If you are Experienced, does that mean you are Successful? Maybe? Depends? What defines Success? . But for arguments sake, lets say Success in Real Estate is closing more deals and making more money. If you do not fully embrace all that real estate has to offer on a daily basis you will never be successful. All the pieces of the real estate puzzle must fit together very tightly. Then and only then will you be both Experienced and Successful!

So Get out there and slay the dragon ( your parent personality that keeps us from change). You must change and adapt. You must bring your best attribute in your former profession to life and adhere and adopt all the other elements and you will reap all the benefits real estate has to offer, and at the same time you will become Experienced.
