Surf City, on Topsail Island, extends off the island onto the mainland, is regarded as teh commercial hub of the area.  It boasts a permanent population of 1,393 adn has plenty of shops, restaurants and other services to support permanent residents and vacationers.

There is a variety of residential real estate to choose from in Surf City, old and new, condos and cottages, beachfront and soundfront, to a name a few.

Topsail Beach, south end of island, has population count of around 471, is the smallest of the island's municipalities.  The town has many more homes than permanent residents which lends itself to a very quiet off season and lots of vacation rentals for tourists during the summer.

North Topsail Beach, on north end of island, incorporated in 1990.  Begins where the New River meets the Atlantic Ocean and stretches to Surf City.  With its population of 843, teh town itself has a limited commercial base and is made up mostly of residential development.
