Energy Saving Tip -- Apply Window Films

By

We have been talking about putting a film on some of our windows for quite some time.  But like almost everything else, we talked about doing it and how great it would be, but never actually did anything.

At least not until the other day. window

We finally applied window tint to the windows along the back side of our house.  These windows get beat windowwindowdown every day by the sun all day long.  It can really take a toll on the AC bill, too.

We bought two rolls of film, one large roll for a picture window we have in our stairwell, and one regular sized roll for the other windows.  We also bought the best stuff we could find.  It was called "Platinum", and it wasn't until we got it home that we realized why it had that name.  It actually looked silverish when we unrolled it, and once on the window, you had a reflective surface when the light is coming from behind you.  So at night, we now have extra mirrors in our house.

It was super easy to apply, although I would reccommend having at least two people to put on the film for te first window, or for any that are rather large.  All you have to do is wet both the window and then both sides of the film.  The wetter the surface the better.  Then you take a good squeegee and use it to force out the water and any bubbles.

A few of our windows took a couple tries, but then we became real pros!

And it was an immediate noticeable change in the temperature of the room.  I have no idea why we waited so long to put up these films.

I have noticed that our AC does not run as long as it used to, and we should be able to keep more of our heat in the house this winter.  Another bonus is that the film blocks out most of the UV rays that cause fading.  So we'll be able to stop any further damage to our floors and rugs.

All I can say is that you've been considering window films for your home, then just do it!  It cost us less than $100, and it will save us much more than that in the future.  Completely worth it!

Great tip!  I've recommended this to many clients.  I recommended it to my own husband when he kept fussing about the temp in his office being more than 10 degrees higher than the house in the evenings.  Since he didn't wanna do the tint, I then suggested a solar screen, in which he quickly ran to Home Depot to get the ingredients for that fun project, and his office is now cooler, just in time for us to move!  Men...

Hmm I've never really thought about window film as an insulator; thanks for the great post!

I was concerned that our houseplants would die.  Most everything that we have (here in Florida) needs long periods of direct sunlight.

Get back to me in a few months and let me know if your plants died. Any experts out there that have already done this?

In our planned community you need to get it approved by the Town Association.  I did not realize that until one of my clients told me he got a citation for having window tinting.

Is this the type that you use a hair dryer with? I am not sure I know of this product.

Donna: A solar screen is another great way to block out all that heat from pouring into your space.  I never really thought about putting up one of those because there are several windows that needed to be treated.

DJ: I actually saw a newspaper article that explained all about the energy savings from applying window tint.  It was the kick that I needed to get this done!

John: There is still lots of sunlight that comes in the windows.  The tint isn't dark, but more reflective.  I can't see where any houseplants would be harmed.

Randy: That's a new one for me.  Definitely something to consider if you live in a community with an HOA.  You'd think they would be all for energy savings...

Mary: This is not the type you use a hair dryer with.  The water you apply to the window and the back side of the film reacts with the film and adheres to the window.  Kinda like a glue that you never have to apply.

I am so tryin' this.  We have one west-facing window in particular that could really use this treatment!  Will also keep this tip handy for clients.

I've been a fan of window tinting since the early '70s when I first put it on my car windows. I don't like window coverings in my home, preferring to see as much of the outdoors as possible, to bring as much of the outdoors in, and to provide lots of light to my plant-filled home. Without window treatments, it can get very hot. Window tinting did everything to let me have my home the way I wanted it without it being extraordinary hot in the summer or cold in the winter.

Window tinting can also help prevent sun damage to your floors and furniture.

There are many, many types of window tinting for different purposes, so make sure you choose the right one for your application.

Hey, Russel. We agree with you 100%. We have not curtains and the tint was our best bet to control the temp while being able to see mother nature. Have a great weekend, Jim
