Halloween Safety Tips for Williamsburg Virginia

It's that time when residents of Williamsburg homes are starting to get ready for Halloween.  Kids are getting excited and choosing their costumes.  Adults are having fun decorating the yard.  But Halloween can also be a dangerous time, especially for kids so while it is important to have fun, it is also important to stay safe.  Make sure you go over safety rules with your children also so they know what is and is not acceptable while going from house to house.  So, here are a few safety tips to make sure your Halloween remains scary only in your imagination:

·         Talk with your kids about what to do if you are separated from them or they get lost.

·         You can even pin emergency contact information on their clothing under their costume, just in case.

·         Only buy costumes that are flame retardant.

·         Try to use makeup instead of masks that can obstruct vision.

·         Make sure your kids have some quarters on them just in case they need to make a call.

·         Carry a flashlight and have your kids carry or wear glow sticks.

·         Make kids walk on the sidewalks, not in the street.

·         Tell children to walk, do not run.  The house isn't going anywhere.

·         Trick or treat in your own neighborhood and stick with the neighbors you know and trust.

·         Do not trample the grass or flowers; stay on the sidewalk, driveway or walkway to the door.

·         If a house does not have their front porch light on, pass it by.

·         If you see a dog or cat in the yard, do not approach it.  You do not know if it is friendly or not.

·         Make sure someone stays at home to hand out the candy.

·         Make sure kids know their phone number and how to dial 911.

·         Make sure your home is safe by locking up any pets and ensuring you have no open flames where costumes can accidentally catch on fire.

·         Do not be the homeowner who has the "healthy snacks".

·         Make sure kids do not eat any candy until it can be inspected fully.  Throw away anything that is open or suspicious looking.

·         Make sure your children are aware of the "mom and dad get first dibs on the candy" rule.

·         Say thank you.  OK, maybe not a safety tip but definitely sage advice!

Before going out trick or treating make sure the kids eat a substantial dinner first.  Older kids going out alone should know when to be back home and have a watch or cell phone so they are perfectly aware of the time.  Smaller children should go out with one or both the parents.  When you get home, inspect the candy and dole out a little at a time over the coming days.  You don't want stomach aches the next day from too  much candy!   Just remember to use the safety tips shown above and then go out and have a great time.  Happy Halloween!
