There are a few 'Just for fun" type groups out there with an extraordinary number of people, some of which reaching over 850,000 people. The "Students against Facebook News Feed (Official Petition to Facebook)" has reached almost 750,000 people in a matter of days. If people could be this passionate about often ignored word issues such as poverty, genocide, disease, homelessness, etc, we could truly make a difference.

Many of us have two things that keep us from being more active in world issues. For one, we are simply un-aware of the increasingly large number issues around the world. The media rarely covers these events. When is the last time you heard about the Darfur genocide on the evening news? For the past 3 years, over 400,000 men, women, and children have been murdered. Villages are continually destroyed, and over 2.5 million people have become refugees. The problem is on-going, yet during June 2005, CNN, FOXNews, NBC/MSNBC, ABC, and CBS ran 50 times as many stories about Michael Jackson and 12 times as many stories about Tom Cruise as they did about the genocide in Darfur. There are hundreds of similar issues that go simply unheard of by the rest of the world.
Now, many feel that these problems are beyond our ability to help, and this happens to the second thing keeping us from standing up and acting out. How can one person possibly help stop something like a war, or a starving nation? How can one person stop disease and genocide? The first step is to stand up and support the cause. There are many things that we, as individuals, can do to help these problems. Ways to help as in individual will be posted here in the weeks to come, but the largest thing we can do is show that we know these problems exist, and that we want solutions. By simply joining this group to say that you are aware and care about our world, you start to make a difference. When large groups of people work together, the world notices. Only then will there be proper media coverage, and in turn action by the more influential people in the world. Change may not always happen right away, but together we can plant the seeds of change. We are in the process of inheriting this world, and it's time we started to take care of it beyond our own comforts of home.
The first thing you could do to help would be to simply spread the word of this group. Invite everyone you can. The more people supporting this group, the more opportunity there is for those in need.
Secondly, educate yourself. Ignorance is one of the worst characteristics a person can have. If anything, be aware of all that is going on around you. Discuss on the board, educate youself on the global issues that affect everyone. Please, do not be afraid to voice yourself.

Soon there will be specific issues brought up here through News Posts. A new issue will be posted around once a week, give or take a bit. The post will include current information, background information, statistics, ways that you can support the cause, and finally links with further information and ways to help.
