Mysterious, non-draining dishwasher... any help out there?

I've got a client's property under contract and it seems that during the inspection it was found that the dishwasher wouldn't drain.  It's only 3 years old.  Does anyone out there have an idea of what might cause this?  The unit has been empty since May or so and I'm curious if the lack of use might have something to do with it.

Would love it if anyone has an idea that my client could try out.

Anyone?  Anyone?  Bueller?

Reba --- I had the same thing in a townhome in River Valley.  The pump had gotten dry from being empty and when the inspector checked it then it didn't start.  Probably the same.  It was fixed by the seller.  Easy,

any idea what the seller did though?  This doesn't give any detail.  Thanks for checking in, Gary, I appreciate the reply.

there were a couple of other issues with appliances (kinda wierd since they were all relatively new), so the appliance repair guy came out.  he took the pump out of the dishwasher, spun the impeller around in his hand a few times until it was loose, put it back and it worked fine. that's what the repair guy told the sellers agent.    and it has worked fine now for quite a while.

2 thoughts from my husband...

- either the drain is blocked...

- or the pump isn't working.

To help find out, you need to start the machine, let it fill.  Then hit 'cancel' if an option.  The pump should engage (or not if broken).  If pump sounds like it comes on but doesn't drain, then something is plugged up....

Hope it helps!

If you can hear the pump working then its a clogged drain. Pour 1-2 gallons of water in the bottom of the dishwasher. Then try again. If it doesn't drain add liquid plumber and let it sit. If it does drain after a few hours its the pump.

we got the dishwasher problem fixed and it looks like a contractor failed to pull out a stop from the dishwasher to the new garbage disposal.  Thanks to all for their assistance!
