No matter what your political convictions are this is an eye opener....What a thankless people we are!!!

David Letterman, on President Bush. (Surprising)

David Letterman wrote this; it's the David we don't often see....

'As most of you know I am not a President Bush fan, nor have I ever been, but this is not about Bush, it is about us, as Americans, and it seems to hit the mark.'
'The other day I was reading
Newsweek  magazine and came across some Poll data I found rather hard to believe.  It must be true given the  source, right?
The
Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans are unhappy with the direction the country is headed and 69 percent of  the country is unhappy with the performance of the President. In essence 2/3 of the citizenry just ain't happy and want a change. So being the knuckle dragger I am, I started thinking, 'What are we so unhappy about?'

A. Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours a day, 7 Days a week?

B. Is our unhappiness the result of having air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter?
C. Could it be that 95.4 percent of these unhappy folks have a job?

D. Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at any time  and see more food in moments than Darfur has seen in the last year?

E. Maybe it is the ability to drive our cars and trucks from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean without having to present identification papers as we move through each state.

F. Or possibly the hundreds of clean and safe motels we would find along the way that can provide temporary shelter?

G. I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying cuisine from around the world is just not good enough either.

H. Or could it be that when we wreck our car, emergency workers show up and provide services to help all and even send a helicopter to take you to the hospital.

I. Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent of Americans who own a home.
J. You may be upset with knowing that in the unfortunate case of a fire, a group of trained firefighters will appear in moments and use top notch equipment to extinguish the flames thus saving you, your family, and your belongings.

K. Or if, while at home watching one of your many flat screen TVs, a burglar or prowler intrudes, an officer equipped with a gun and a bullet-proof vest will come to defend you and your family against attack or loss.

L. This all in the backdrop of a neighborhood free of bombs or militias rap ing and  pillaging the residents. Neighborhoods where 90% of teenagers own cell phones and computers.

M. How about the complete religious, social and political freedoms we enjoy that are the envy of everyone in the world?

Maybe that i s what has 67% of you folks unhappy.

Fact is, we are the largest group of ungrateful, spoiled brats the world has ever seen. No wonder the world loves the U.S., yet has a great disdain for its citizens. They see us for what we are. The most blessed people in the world who do nothing but complain about what we don't have, and what we hate about the country instead of thanking the good Lord we live here.

I know, I know. What about the president who took us into war and has no plan to get us out? The president who has a measly 31 percent approval rating? Is this the same president who guided the nation in the dark days after 9/11? The president that cut taxes to bring an economy out of recession? Could this be the same guy who has been called every name in the book for succeeding in keeping all the spoiled ungrateful brats safe from terrorist attacks? The commander in chief of an all-volunteer army that is out there defending you and me?
Did you hear how bad the President is on the news or talk show? Did this news affect you so much, make you so unhappy you couldn't take a look around for yourself and see all the good things and be glad? Think about it......are you upset at the President because he actually caused you personal pain OR is it because the 'Media' told you he was failing to kiss your sorry ungrateful behind every day.
Make no mistake about it. The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have volunteered to serve, and in many cases may have died for your freedom. There is currently no draft in this country. They didn't have to go. They are able to refuse to go and end up with either a ''general'' discharge, an 'other than honorable'' discharge or, worst case scenario, a ''dishonorable' discharge after a few days in
the brig.

So why then the flat-out discontentment in the minds of 69 percent of Americans?

Say what you want, but I blame it on the media. If it bleeds it leads and they specialize in bad news. Everybody will watch a car crash with blood and guts. How many will watch kids selling lemonade at the corner? The media knows this and media outlets are for-profit corporations. They offer wha t sell s, and when criticized, try to defend their actions by 'justifying' them in one way or another. Just ask why they tried to allow a murderer like O.J. Simpson to write a book about how he didn't kill his wife, but if he did he would have done it
this way......Insane!

Turn off the TV, burn Newsweek, and use the New
York Times
for the bottom of your bird cage. Then start being grateful for all we have as a country. There is exponentially more good than bad. We are among the most blessed people on Earth and should thank God several times a day, or at least be thankful and appreciative.' 'With hurricanes , tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, 'Are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the < STRONG > Pledge of Allegiance?'

I had seen this letter and I was told David Letterman.  Who ever wrote it, hit the nail on the head.  If nearly 70% of the Americans are unhappy about where this country is being lead...then why did nearly 80% of the same fools get re-elected to their office?  Sometimes the saying

STUPID AMERICANS!   fits really good!

Hugh - I just saw a presentation from a man who visited Papau New Guinea to help build a hospital.  He said what struck him and his son was that so many people there were happy.  He said they are poor, they are violent, most subsist off the land, they don't have indoor plumbing and so on.  Yet, they are content.  I am thankful for all that we have materially.  But, I would give it all up in a heartbeat to keep my freedom.  I don't want the luxuries and the material blessings if I'm not free.

Hugh,

Too bad this is a copy and paste email and you didn't personally write it.  Since  they are now featuring politcal posts I would have flagged it for a feature.   Think it would make the first page?

Hugh,

You and your supporting responders are ignoring Brian's "snoops.com" reference that neither Leno nor Letterman uttered these words.  Those words, more likely, came from the likes of Limbaugh or Hannity or their ilk.  In any case, your point does not negate the fact that Bush (and Cheney) are in disfavor, if not despised, by the vast majority of Americans.  If we believe the constant rhetoric that: "the American people know", then you would have to accept Bush and Cheney's failure in their leadership roles.  Certainly, time is the best judge of that, but to argue that our all-volunteer Army "have volunteered to serve, and in many cases may have died for your freedom" is a true representation of our soldiers and Marines attitudes is your failure to understand the reality of "elective war".  What history will tell us in another 50 years or so is that the "military-industrial complex" that President and General Eisenhower warned us about has prevailed using 9/11 as their justification.  And, a president with no clue and a vice-president with a misguided mission have not served us well.

Bill,

I wouldn't care if Mickey Mouse wrote it. It would still wring true. To me this is a letter about realizing how much we have to be thankful for living in this great country. As far as President Bush i have alsways felt that he was in large part a figurehead with alot of bad and self centered advisors behind him.. But that being said i also feel he is a good man who does not desrve the disrespect with which he is treated. If you haven't noticed he has managed to keep us safe from further attacks since 911 and I honestly believe he cares about this country and was not afraid to make the hard decisions. I sincerely doubt he will go down as our worst president in fact history just may show he was the right man for the circumstances, we shall see.

Hugh, like you whoever said it, it is truth. Look at what happened in India yesterday, a foretaste of things to come? Look who they targeted?

Bill - I personally do not care who wrote the piece, it still does ring true and is very correct in what is is saying about Americans attitudes.

Hugh - I should have said this up front. Sorry.

Bill - Disfavor, have you looked at the numbers on our Democratic lead Congress (and they are still dropping).  Also you are the one who is not in touch with the reality of our all volunteer military who are reenlisting in greater numbers and serving longer and they are NOT serving this country for the "military-industrial complex".

Hugh,

I believe that you have a good grasp of GW; he was simply in way over his head and let his advisors determine the course of the county.  Although he claimed to be the "decider", he acquiesed in the face of Cheney, Rumsfeld, big oil, et al.  I believe history will judge him much more harshly than you do.

Brian,

Don't preach to me about not being "in touch" with our military and the thinking of our soldiers.  I am a combat vet having served proudly with the 11th Armored Carvalry Regiment in Vietnam.  You foolishly think that 19 and 21 years-olds are sophisticated and knowedgeable enough to properly judge the wisdom of our Iraqi incursions.  The reason why we use our youth to fight our wars is that the older a person gets, the less likely one is to fall for the "patriotism" guise without good evidence in support.  To date, who has gained financially from our Iraq war?  Could it be Halliburton, Blackwater and the like?  Eisenhower had it right but the neo-cons think they know better than what history has taught us.  The one thing they are wise about:  they don't put their lives at risk with their policies and decisions to fight elective wars.

Hugh - The post is correct in that we have many many things to be thankful for in this country.  I just had that convo yesterday with my girlfriend about how lucky we are (I know first-hand having grown up in 3rd world countries).  What the alleged letter neglects is that our unhappiness with Bush isn't simply about how our country stands vs much of the world.  It's about how it stands vs how it should or could stand.  We compare our current standing vs 5 years ago, 10 years ago, etc.  If it was the US vs the rest of the world, every President of ours would be virtually infallable.

This is so sad but true, we just celebrated Thanksgiving, we have so much to be Thankful for yet everyone is just worried about black friday and Christmas sales, wonder if there Thankful for a place to shop or the freedom to even have Christmas!  This country is going through a bad time, but what about the countries that experience it every minute of every day!

Hugh - it really doesn't matter who voiced the sentiment, some of these things could even be attributed to Jon Stewart. Yet most outlets ignore the 80+ percent that is unhappy with congress. However, I don't see a lot of people trying to leave the country for greener pastures, while I do see millions wanting to come here, to the U.S., warts and all.

Tchaka,

On the otherhand look at how much better off we are than if Al Gore would have been president on 911. We would have assessed Al Queda a carbon assessment.
