The Lament of the Chronic Commenter

By
Real Estate Agent with Leading Edge Properties

I comment on other's posts because other people are always writing interesting and thought provoking posts.  Mostly, I think I write pretty good comments...not just your average, "thanks for sharing," or "Awesome post!"  Real comments, including my point of view or a relay of a similar event in my own experience, whatever is appropriate.

But I know I need to post to my own blog.

So, here I sit...staring at this big white box with 2 tabs (WYSIWYG and HTML)...also a decent toolbar across the top.

Why isn't there a tool with a "?"...it could help me with ideas, scan what I've written and ask me, "What is it you're really trying to say?" or something else helpful.

If there were a 12 step program, I would certainly join.

My name is Amy, and I'm a chronic commenter.

I admit I have a problem, I'm willing to change my behavior, I apologize for my paltry postings to those dear few who have subscribed to my blog.

Clearly, I need a support group.

I've subscribed to almost 30 people's blogs because they write such interesting posts.  I read them nearly every day (by the way, how do they come up with such good content EVERY DAY???) and feel compelled to comment on almost each and every one!!!

I've joined groups.  Lots of groups.  Even one called Blogs Happen.  How do they happen?  For me, with lots of angst, hair pulling and teeth gnashing. (currently, I'm going on 45 minutes to create this little masterpiece.)

Its not like I don't have opinions.  Just ask my husband.  Very rarely do I NOT voice my opinion on whatever the subject happens to be, thus the chronic commenting.

AAAHHH...maybe that's it!  I have too many opinions!  Add to that my disorganization (take a look at my desk) and I can't seem to pull one cohesive idea together for a decent post to my blog.

I know I need to post.  I should post several times a week.  I need to generate SEO, google juice, develop a following, someday, maybe someday, be awarded with a coveted gold star and be featured on Active Rain!!!

But for now...well, let me go see what C-Tann, Jeremy or Lenn has to say, maybe I'll get an idea from one of them.

Oh who am I kidding?  I'll leave a comment and decide to try to write a post tomorrow...

Congrats on the gold star! Sounds like you have a lot to post... maybe you could post several small ones instead of everything in one? I prefer to read the ones that are small and to the point, my attention span is not very big. Just ask my husband, I can never get through a whole movie. This post obviously turned out great!

Hi Amy - Looks like you've filled up the 'big white box' quite well this time! Comments do sometimes turn into posts of their own. When you feel that happening, just add a link back to the original author. They'll appreciate it, and you will have added another level to the conversation.

I comment a lot more than I blog, but seem to get ideas for writing every day...usually I'm driving or running from one meeting to the next client...I have slips of papers everywhere in my world, intending to write about...I honestly don't know where some of these folks get all that time. I think I'm just a slowpoke...I've had good sales this year, THANKS TO ACTIVE RAIN! If I didn't have to keep those gears moving, I'd just love to write! The wheels in my jind never seem to slow down. This is a wonderful post, from your heart...it always begins there! Merry Christmas!

I'm trying to finish my AR time and go to bed, but then I read one more post and here I am! I relate to your chronic commenting.  And, I have a hard time finding something to say that the rest of the world is going to be interested by.

Perhaps my tool will help you (just for getting content, I'm still working in interest :) ). What are 3 or 2, or even 1 single most interesting thing in your world right now? For me, real estate, living green, and Vancouver, Wa are my big interests. So, I write a post about each topic each week.  And, when I make comments, long like this, that is always a strong hint that I found something to blog about!

Good luck!

WOW!!!   I got busy with work and Christmas prep yesterday and this morning woke up to a gold star and over 50 comments!  After picking my jaw up off the table, I figured I should probably respond to the unexpected outpouring of comments, so here we go:

Gary- I hope this wasn't just a fluke!

Charlie- We need to find that treatment program...a spa perhaps, someplace warm??

Morgan- Great advice! Thanks!

Christine- I aspire to once a week!

Kate- Thanks for subscribing!  I'll try not to disappoint!

Eleanor- I KNOW!  I LOVE GOLD!

Jessica- Who knew???  Not me...Thanks!

Lori- And what a Monday!  Thanks!

Tony & Darcy- Well, I love their shoes, but this is such a non-active activity...!

Barb- You are too kind

Castellum- You said it!  Angst - Never thought writing about it would do this to boost my confidence!

Christine- Thanks for subscribing and also on your feature!

Bill- Ahh, a fellow keester-kicker...I'm here for you man!

Lesley- A Little Book of Blog Ideas...hmmm...I like it!  Let the dazzling begin!

Karen- Well said!  Thanks!

TLW- I'm honored to be in your company!

Linda- My thoughts exactly! And thanks for subscribing!

Vicki- Thanks for the comment and good luck in your efforts as well!

Lisa- You're right and I'm subscribed to a few of them.  There are some whose posts are far and few between, but they're so worth the wait!

Cameron- A Milestone has definitely been reached!

Tamara- You're welcome! I might be able to get an "A" in your class with all the commenting I do!

Lane- Great minds think alike!  The 12 Days of Real Estate - I thought about that too.  We should both write it and see what we come up with!

Vickie- As soon as Charlie and I figure out the right 12-step program, we'll let you know!

Shay-That's just how this started!  No ideas, too many ideas, hmmm...a ghostwriter.  I'd probably be too critical and comment too much!

Cynthia- You're welcome and thanks for the congrats!

Marcy- I plan on looking at yours, no doubt I will comment!  Its what I do...thanks for the ideas!

Kate- As I sit here manually writing my responses on paper first, I may need to ask for your help!  Thanks!

Melody- Will you be my mentor too???

Reba- I think I need a mini tape recorder.  My car time seems to be when I get lots of ideas...writing while driving can be done, but its a little dangerous!  Thanks for the ideas and advice!

Russ- I think they're called "The Lurkers"!!!

Wendy- I'm sure you have much worthiness to share - quoting Nike and Tony & Darcy above, Just Do It!

Roland- I'm getting my toes wet, give me time!

Mindy & Jay- A breakthrough indeed!  A pro...not so much; thanks for cheering me on tho!

Lori- What a good point!  I always feel awful for people who have no comments or very few comments; I always try to comment on those...what goes around, comes around, right?

Debbie- Well thanks!  And I can't help but notice your excellence in seeing the beauty of my granddaughter!  But holy smokes!  Postlets expiring???  Oh crap!!!  I didn't know that!  Thanks for the heads up!

Joel- It is nice to comment on posts, and I will continue to be commenting chronically.  And "Drawing elaborate worlds" is cryptically intriguing...!

Diane- Not second guessing myself is a concept I am UN-familiar with, thanks for your commendation tho!

Dinah Lee- Thank You!  Smaller is harder...you may infer that I'm a chronic talker too!!!

John- And when I finished this post, I had more ANGST!!!  No pictures, no links...really thought I had screwed it up and nobody would read it...HA!  Glad you did though, thanks!!!

Mara- I'm with you dear.  Lots of ideas, unformed and unwritten.  Not enough time in the day...Merry Christmas to you and yours!

David- I am in constant awe of them!  Thanks for the congrats!

Lynn- Great way to focus! Now go to bed!

Funny story, Amy (unless it's true)...  Seriously though, blogging shouldn't be so hard.  You're not writing a novel, you're writing a passing thought.  A lot of people blog for SEO and try to target their posts for keywords - that's ridiculous.  The purpose of blogging is to comment on what's going on in your life and this will shed light on your personality.

Amy- What a great post and most deserving of a 'Gold Star". Just keep plugging along. It truly gets easier the more you do. A lot like riding a bike. Keeping your balance in the beginning is tough but after a bit you are on yur way with the wind in your face and the world waiting to be explored.

Amy:  First of all, congratulations on the feature.  Way to go!  As for coming up with ideas, reading others posts will give me inspiration.  (And yes...go for it with the Thank You post.  You can borrow any idea from me.  I love to share.)  And life gives me inspiration.  If you're a Seinfeld fan, you will remember the episode where Jerry and George are coming up ideas for their show.  Even the most mundane things in their lives were material.  I'd love to do a post on the "Refrigerator Beauty Pageant" my husband and I have going with all the photo Christmas cards, but may be a bit too hardcore for all our friends to hear that there is one clear cut winner.  Hmmm...maybe a Members Only post?

Hi Amy,

Classic title!  :)  However, there's nothing wrong with being a commenter.  It shows you're interested in other people.

Everyone has their own strengths.  Jason Crouch once commented on my comments.  That recognition from Jason is one of the things that encouraged me to finally join ActiveRain.

Amy, this is a great blog post! Congrats on your gold star....it is pretty thrilling, isn't it!!

Now that you have calmed down and quit doing the "featured victory dance" around your office,

it is time to talk blog topics.  They are everywhere....that is one of the signs that you are

truly addicted to this forum. When almost everything is fodder for your blog post.  I love to read

others blogs and comment, too.  There is just so much interesting stuff out here....
