Matunuck is a beach community located in South Kingston, RI. The area is bordered by Route 1, Matunuck Beach Road, the ocean, and Moonstone Beach Road. There are several communites within this small area. These include Blackberry Hill, Mary Carpenters, Roy Carpenters, Matunuck Point, and the area including Park and Washington streets. There is a year-round market with a small cafe (my father goes here every morning for coffee with a small group of locals before the market is open). There is a laundromat that my parents open and close each day year round. Other notable establishments are the Ocean Mist (Kevin Finnegan, proprietor) and Tara's Joyce Family Pub. These are both great places to have a drink or get something to eat. The Ocean Mist is packed on Sunday mornings for breakfast/brunch. My son calls this the place you go for breakfast where you wait a long time and get to play video games. There is a surf shop that caters to surfers who come to surf at Deep Hole in Matunuck.
I grew up at Roy Carpenter's Beach in Matunuck where my parents and many relatives still own houses there. These are seasonal homes only. There are approximately 400 cottages in this beach community. There is a community associaion that sponsors an annual Field Day, Cake Walk and Penny Social, fireworks display, and Fourth of July Pots and Pans parade. There are also weekly block dances, bingo nights for adults and children, and craft nights.
The houses on Blackberry Hill are larger and can be lived in year-round.
Matunuck is an affordable area to buy a year-round or vacation home that many people do not know about. There are beautiful beaches and rough surf.
