Going to the Movies

theater We went to the movies this evening to see Inkheart.   It was a good entertaining movie.  Not too much violence, not too scary, no rude language and no sexual innuendos..  Obviously, I am not going to ruin the story for anyone, what I really want to talk about is rudeness in the theater.

Has anyone been to the theater on a Friday or Saturday night recently?  I was appalled at the number of youngsters dropped off at the door to be left to watch the show with no parental supervision.  Why do people believe the staff at the theater to be their babysitters?

I truly cannot imagine ever leaving my children with their friends in a public place to congregate when they were young.  I feel there should be at least one responsible parental person on the excursion in case of emergency.  Apparently, I am alone in my belief.

There were many too many unsupervised children in the theater.  They were rude, loud and totally out of control at times while the show was playing.  The staff had to stand watch on at least 3 occasions and this was an action/fantasy film.  Something one would think these young people would be interested in hearing and seeing.

As we were leaving, I paused to ask the manger if it was like this all the time.  He said yes the parents drop them off for a movie and free babysitting.  He kicks them out for bad behavior and they come back in.  He has no recourse.  I said I am so sorry.

We drove home and I cannot help but wonder what are these parents thinking?

Robert,

It is worth seeing.  My daughter had read the book and was the one who wanted to go.  I went along to be the parental supervisor...

Ann, I can't believe two things.  First that parents would just drop off their kids to see whatever movies that they feel like.  I loved the movie, Juno, but there were over 80% of the kids that were about 13 years old there with no parents to be found.  Just amazing!!!  Needless to say, I want to hit a few of them so that they shut up in the theatre as well.  Most are phenomenal, but there's always a handful that need a good kick in the pants.

Larry,

They were all at the show with us tonight!  I had to stop myself several times from walking to the front of the theater and giving some friendly parental advice.  When we arrived home, both of my sons said they were ready to do the same.

Sandy,

I would have to say most of these were pre-teens.

I have been thinking it is easier to stay at home and rent a movie.  That way my movie won't be disrupted by some ill-mannered people.  Unless it is me of course.

BTW, I wanted to say hello to you before you left the board of directors meeting but you were gone before it was over.  Oh well maybe in Branson.

Ann, it is amazing how little supervision some kids get these days, and then they wonder why they turn out the way they do.

Ann, Your description is a perfect reason why I prefer movies in the comfort of my own home. Quiet and relaxing. A bad theater experience can distract from a good movie.

Bo,

I know you are correct.  I do enjoy going to see some when they are in the theater though.  My screen is not THAT big.  ;-)

Ann, your question about dropping off kids and leaving them unsupervised brings back fond memories.  When I was a kid, our mothers would drop us off at the theatre for a trip feature.  They would take your ticket stub and put it in a fish bowl, and during intermission would draw for things like bikes and such.  We were there all day, the entire cost was 35 cents which included popcorn (necessary for throwing at the bad guys on the screen) and a drink.  I was 8 years old the first time I was allowed to go to the movies alone.  I was 10 when I was allowed to ride the city bus to the local shopping center.  Times have changed.  I dont think I would drop my kid off today until he/she was at least 12, old enough to call for help if need be, young enough to enjoy the freedom being at the movies alone would afford.

Terry,

Glad I could help you remember the fun.

Back in the good old days, the owners/employees of the theaters did not have to worry about children misbehaving as much as now.  At least then, authority was taken seriously.  This poor man at the show had no recourse against these unruly children.  I really felt sorry for him.
