How to win a green card

I'll bet most of you didn't know that it's possible to actually WIN a "green card" (gives you lawful permanent residency in the US).

Yep, it's true and the U.S. State Department's Citizenship and Immigration Services (CISS) gives away 50,000 of these green cards each year to residents of countries deemed to have low rates of immigration to the United States. They call this program the "Diversity Visa Lottery Program".

"What is the Diversity Visa Lottery Program? Each year, 50,000 immigrant visas are made available through a lottery to people who come from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States. None of these visas are available for people who come from countries that have sent more than 50,000 immigrants to the United States in the past five years. The State Department's National Visa Center holds the lottery every year, and chooses winners randomly from all qualified entries. Anyone who is selected under this lottery will be given the opportunity to apply for permanent residence. If permanent residence is granted, then the individual will be authorized to live and work permanently in the United States. You will also be allowed to bring your spouse and any unmarried children under the age of 21 to the United States."

I sold a house a couple of years ago to a guy from Latvia whose wife had won one. He was a software engineer and they had two delightful kids. That's where I first learned about the green card lottery.

I'll never forget something he told me while we were talking during our home search. "Everyone wants to come to America." he said. It's because of the freedoms we enjoy here and take for granted most of the time because we've never been without them.

The lottery winners have to meet some other token eligibility requirements in addition to being lucky.

Your country of origin must not have had more than 50,000 immigrants to the US in the last 5 years. So Mexico and Brazil would be out but countries like Burkina Faso can win 129, Uzbekistan is eligible for 3,284, and Nauru gets 1.

Nauru is an interesting story in itself. This south Pacific island is a source of phosphate (that's about all it's a source of), is the world's smallest independent republic, has a population of 13,700, and is just over 5,000 acres.

There's also an education or work experience requirement. You must have a high school education or equivalent OR two years of work experience within the past five years in an occupation requiring at least two years of training or experience to perform.

That's pretty much it to be eligible. The applications for the 2010 drawing have already closed so you'll have to wait until 2010 to submit your application for the 2011 lottery.

Lucky winners are eligible to bring their spouse and all their dependent children under the age of 21 along.

There are also several other avenues foreigners can take to get a green card; if you have a relative living here, marriage to a us citizen, adoption, and employment for "Persons of extraordinary ability in the sciences, arts, education, business, or athletics."

Let's face it folks, a lot of the world wants to come to the US because it's the "Land of the Free" (so far anyway) and still full of opportunities.

Most green card holders make marvelous, law abiding, tax paying, upstanding citizens.

Sometimes I think there were 48000 winners in one town alone. Just joking.

I will say I met a family from Romania that moved here about 10 years ago.  They worked very hard from the bottom up and are now living the American Dream!  He was a college man, that was willing to work as a laborer here in the USA.  They earned it, and sing the praises of how great the USA is.  I think it was a good deal for all.

I have been in the US for 22 years. It was very common back then. A lot of Irish folk used this method to live here.

Good story, Jim.  The responses, however, lack any facts.

My parents legally immigrated to the United States.  They applied for a visa to the United States and were granted one 13 years after applying.  That's a long time to wait.  They came here with 2 luggages and a dream.  Contrary to popular belief, it's not the legal immigrants that eat up the welfare system.  I did a paper in college, and if I remember correctly, the facts are that if you give legal immigrants opportunity, they run with it.  The study that was done found that over the course of 10 years, legal immigrants earned more money, had a higher percentage of college graduates, and had a very low percentage on welfare as compared to the mass American population.  Immigrants work hard, more so than many Americans--that stems from the fact that they came from a country that offered them nothing, so many work like crazy to provide.  Your choices in America are to work hard and earn a descent living or be lazy and earn a descent welfare check.  You won't find many lazy legal immigrants relying on taxpayers money.  Most immigrants are a very proud kind of people--they do not like handouts.  They come to America for an opportunity, not a handout.

To win the visa lottery, you can't just be slow joe from any country.  One of our friends won the visa lottery a few years back--he is math professor and his son is a air traffic controller.  They don't let just anybody in... you have that confused with the Democrats that have talked the talk, but haven't addressed any type of solution.  I'm against illegal immigration and all for allowing 50,000 educated, hardworking people in the US.

Bottom line is that we are a nation of immigrants.  Legal immigrants aren't using up your tax dollars.  The crappy social system that is set up is all wrong and will continue to drain tax payers money until it is changed.  All this social welfare the government gives out is designed to keep people lazy and staying home.  You make $1,000 a month you can get welfare checks, free healthcare, etc.  But, if you work hard, and make $1,500 a month, you get no help, buy your own health insurance, etc.  The whole system is senseless...and will probably get worse...Sociaized medicane is next...are you kidding me??

Jim - we SO need to revise our immigration policies. There are so many potential immigrants that would be contributing members of our country. I'd like to see a Retirement Visa.

Jim, I didn't know this. Thanks for the education.  I try to learn a minimum of one thing per day and you just made that available for me today. Better informed makes for a better citizen.
