Great Falls has a heritage rich in American history.  The city of some 16,000 residents takes its name from the Great Falls of the Potomac, the largest in a series of treacherous, rocky falls that mark a fault line along which the river drops seventy-five feet over a two mile distance. 

The main road through Great Falls is Georgetown Pike.  More than 300 years ago this road was a buffalo trail winding along the Potomac River.  This exclusive horse-oriented community is a fast-growing, upscale residential area.  Great Falls homes for sale feature spacious single-family homes on lots of at least one half acre.  Although it has undergone considerable growth, Great Falls remains rural in atmosphere.

This early American-style village center features quaint shops and fine restaurants.  Nearby, Sugarland Run is a community of approximately 1,000 homes and townhouses built during 1960s.  It is located just northeast of Sterling and a bit east of the Dulles Mall.  The neighborhood features interconnected sidewalks and paths that wind through the area's woods near the Potomac.  Both towns are near the Fairfax/Loudon County border just 20 miles northwest of Washington D.C. Students in the community are served by the Fairfax County School District which annually earns honors and awards in all academic, extracurricular, and athletic areas in regional, state and national competitions.  A full 92% of high school graduates go on to some form of post secondary education.  Seniors who took the SAT in 2001 had an average combined score of 1116.  This far exceeds the average combined scores of 1011 in Virginia and 1020 in the nation.

Great Falls was originally established as an amusement park with a dance hall, merry-go-round and picnic sites.  The dance hall and merry-go-round are now gone, but the beauty of the park and the majesty of the falls remain.  While it is largely rural in character, it is now a close-knit village with a relaxing atmosphere.

Great Falls Park, part of the George Washington Memorial Parkway, is an 800-acre park located along the Potomac River 14 miles upriver from Washington D.C.  The park is known for two things: its scenic beauty at the head of Potomac River fall line and the historic Potomac Canal.

One of the few all-brick mills in Virginia, the Colvin Run Mill is an example of the many mills that served northern Virginia in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The rebuilt structure recreates the atmosphere of its early times.  A tour of the Mill offers the chance to watch and listen to its massive machinery and to admire the skill of craftsmen.
