Just a few years ago you may have taken a Sunday drive on 401 South leading away from downtown Raleigh and not seen too much but farmland, some cattle and a guy on a tractor going about 10 miles per hour holding up traffic.....one or two cars. This area of Southern Wake County would kind of remind you of Hazzard County we all used to watch every Friday night back in the day just before the Love Boat and Fantasy Island...yeah, you remember.
But now, when you take that ride down 401 there are many neighborhoods on either side of the road leading to a booming intersection called 401 and Ten Ten. About ten minutes up the road is Fuquay Varina (few-quay). Fuquay is a small town with a lot of history and along with Holly Springs just West of it, are grabbing a lot of new residents that 10 years ago North Raleigh was getting. In March alone there were 456 houses listed for sale in Fuquay. That is a huge jump considering 10 years ago no one had heard of the town unless you were born within 20 miles of town. Out of those listings there were 1420 total showings which is proof positive people are interested. You also know you are growing when you have a Dunkin' Donuts....! The downtown area has now received a facelift in the past year and gives you that "hometown" feel with soda shops, book stores and a hardware store that has been there longer than most residents. Amazingly, just around the corner from the nostalgic scenery of the old train station is the typical Wal-Mart shopping center that small towns oppose, but then totally support when they are there.
With many new neighborhoods being developed, a new shopping center, a Post Office without long lines and many recreational activities and leagues for the kids, Fuquay should be on your list to see if you are moving to the area. Out of 100 counties in North Carolina, Hazzard is not one of them; just in case you were wondering!
