On February 26, 2009, the Wilmington Regional Association of Realtors Equal Opportunity and Cultural Diversity Committee hosted their first Minority Professional Networking Event. The event was held at the St. Thomas Preservation Hall in Downtown Wilmington. It was a great success!

The Wilmington Professional Minority Networking Group in Wilmington, NC was started by Shann Coleman a Nuclear Engineer at the GE Facility located in Wilmington, NC. The group boasts more than 500 members and is a great place to meet professionals to make both business and personal connections. The Equal Opportunity and Diversity Committee heard about Shann and his group and knew immediately it was something they wanted to learn more about and work and be a part of.

The event included an introduction by Shann Coleman and guest speaker Cynthia Crane, Executive Director of Junior Achievement for the Cape Fear Region spoke to the members about the need for diverse volunteers for the local Junior Achievement Program. Followed by an interesting game of Diversity Bingo during which we learned what Potlatch, Juneteenth, Seder and the Bone Game are who spoke 3 languages and so many other fun facts about each other. It was a great end to a fabulous night.

I am fortunate to be the Chairperson for the Equal Opportunity and Cultural Diversity Committee in the upcoming year. I cannot express how excited we were to take part in this Networking Event.

I feel that this quote from the night of the event sums it up,

"There is an old African proverb that says it takes a whole village to raise a child. In that same spirit, I believe it takes the vibrant leadership of professionals to create effective participation in an ever more complex multicultural and global community.

I am proud to say that we have begun our journey toward inclusiveness. The committed members of the Equal Opportunity and Cultural Diversity Committee continue on that journey and will be successful."

Each and everyone in the community has a paticipation on how a system will success whether in business or city progress. You are very fortunate to have been in that gathering.
