Man Screaming, "I Quit!" Clipart Image

Frustrations and disappointments hit an all time high and you are ready to quit, toss in the towel?  When you reach that point there are a few things you need to consider pulling yourself back on track.  I'm speaking of your posts with no visitors and few to no comments and the invisible feeling you may be experiencing.

•· So you pour out your heart on what you consider to be "Feature" worthy content.  This time you know you have hit a bull's eye.  You labor on the wording, clever images to incorporate, popular topic or thought.  You push Submit.  Wait; go back and forth to see if your post has entered the blog path for viewers, yes ... there it is.  Wait, a couple of minutes pass, go back to your home page ... no comments yet.  Click to the blog posts, yes still there but working itself down.  Flip to the feature list, no not yet but surly the powers that will be will read.  Click, click back and forth.  No, no, no comments, no interest, no satisfaction, no gold star.  Your post works its way down the line and then off the page, 0 comments, no recognition, no pat on the back.

•· What went wrong?  It may have nothing to do with your content but some other factors to consider.  First of all - are you writing for the Feature or what is you motive?  I have found personal satisfaction for making my post be a mirror of my outlook and thoughts.  If you write with the intent of the Feature then you more than likely have set yourself up for failure or disappointment.  Yes, being recognized and all the glorious comments are exciting and rewarding but should never be the purpose for the content of your post.  Personally I try to write to uplift myself, give out helpful suggestions to others, pass on experiences, and give tips.  With that frame of mindset you will build your own subscribers who will enjoy reading your post because of what you offer.  Write and they will come.

•· Title - be clever; hit on the content in thoughtful wording.  Think about when you read posts, what is it that attracts you to go further to click and read?   The heading, the first few lines of the post are the grabbers.  Be selective to quickly guide the reader to what your topic covers.

•· Content - Who has time to read a novel?  Be concise, thoughtful, use bullet points, and respect to layout.

•· Be yourself, let your personality shine.

•· Proper grammar and spelling.  Check in word and read over what you have authored again, don't be so quick to submit.

•· Join groups that center on interest that you have a post that is a great fit.  It may be featured there.

•· Subscribe to others - if you give of your time to thoughtfully comment on many posts, consistently to those you enjoy, they in turn will visit your post and comment.  Your AR friends!

•· What time of day do you post?  Experiment as to when the traffic is higher on AR and more exposure.  Just remember at popular posting times your exposure on the blog line goes rapid down the line and time visible at a first glance.

The Gold Star is great but your self satisfaction of expressing yourself, sharing, and educating is what Active Rain brings.  So give yourself a gold star when you hit the big zero and move on.  Look in the mirror to see what you can do to alter some things to attract more viewers.  Keep in mind that if you are happy with what you post then goal achieved!

I agree with you about what are your motives for blogging, acceptance or an opportunity to let others get to know you through your words and presentations. I think that it is very important to enjoy what you do rather than being frustrated by a lack of a gold star. Great post!

Hi Connieeee !

This is so true, and I absolutely believe and subscribe to all your theories.

I try to choose catchy titles, and write content I think will capture peeps - whether they are members or customers - if it gets a feature, great, if not, I dont lose any sleep at all over it at all - it seems like I have a dozen more posts in my head at any given time, so I just keep on keepin' on !!

I love that you highlighted that if you are writing for a feature, then you probably wont get featured ! - weird but that's just how it often goes ! ... I'm just happy to have people who comment, thats the real fun part for me, I often have terrific conversations in the comments !

Cheers Connie !!!

Sheldon

(BTW, I flagged your Olympic Rings post for a feature yesterday - I personally thought that deserved it - but alas - I am no A|R god !!! ... just a small A|R doormouse !!!)

Excellent post, Connie! I almost felt like you were describing me in your second paragraph! :)  And admittedly, there have been posts that made me wonder, "...and that's being featured because????"

But you're so right when you say, "Keep in mind that if you are happy with what you post then goal achieved!"

Great tips! Thanks for sharing.

Part of it is the luck of the draw. With 140,059 members now, it's very difficult for the Powers That Be to visit all the worthy posts that are flagged by members as being worthy. It also looks like they pretty well use fresh stuff, so if they've all gone to bed and wake up the next morning to find your 18-hour-old post and hundreds of 1-hour-old posts, they use the 1-hour-old posts. In my analysis, which is not complete, I think the 80/20 rule is very effective here in that 80% of the Featured posts are posted between the hours of 6:00 a.m. Pacific Time and about 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time. That really makes a lot of sense since some of the Powers That Be have lives and families outside of ActiveRain, so those pretty well match standard business hours covering all time zones, and then a little more. For those who work in the late evening and wee hours of the morning, like me, Featured Posts are few and far between.

Hi Connie, I just "flagged" this post for the gold star award because you really hit on a topic that many wonder about.  Blogging for the just getting the "gold star" is never my focus and I'm always quite surprised when I actually do get one featured, especially with all the great writers and topics posted out there.

Keep blogging to be true to yourself and all the tips and pointers you suggest are spot on!

I always enjoy what you write, gold star or not!

Dont let that thought of the little gold star get in your way.  Not everyone can write a featured post like Sheldon (Just kidding Sheldon, I just assume you are 'following the response'   LOL )

Anyway, write becase you want to write.  People will follow you because they enjoy your writing, not because of how many stars you have.  Im sure the gold star is going to happen soon enough.

The Gold Stars Connie I am convinced are completely random when the gods pull the lever on you but you have to have all the elements you mention as well. You are well aware that many stupid posts get Gold stars and many excellent works of literature and thinking languish and are forgotten. At some point you just have to not fret over such things. Russel makes a great point that with more members, less features to be doled out, unless they have more per day.

It's always nice to be recognized isn't it? But for those who get discouraged, I hope they will remember why they are blogging and for whom they are writing. I doubt buyers & sellers in my market could care a lick about how many gold stars I've gotten in the past.

Hi Connie...great post.  It's so funny that sometimes when I put a lot of thought into a post that I think everyone will think is "feature" worthy, nothing, nada and when I post just a quirky post about something that has happened to me or just popped into my head....boom!  There it is...that loveable little start.  I just posted recently about being so excited about the star and new rainmaker badge.  But, I know that's just surface stuff and not the heart of it all.  I agree also, that the time of day you post makes a difference.  It's just so hard to catch all the great ones.

When I was a teenager, there were times I was desperate for a boyfriend.  I never found one during those times. It was when I wasn't looking that I would "click" with someone.  Whether looking for gold stars or love, perhaps it's when we're relaxed and free to put our true selves out in the world that rewards come unbidden.

Connie,  I think we all crave recognition and when it comes we glow for a while, but you are right on with this blog.  Nobody is more competitive than me and I love getting featured but when I have been, it was an accidental surprise.  I've written blogs that I thought were inspired and they didn't get featured but then the next quickly written diatribe gets featured.  Go figure.

Too many people write "stuff" just to be featured, and I'll skim through some of them with my finger down my throat... blah!

If people would just blog to their own purpose, which is the consumer who can put money in their pocket, we could get a lot more material that is worth reading.

Hi Connie,

Nice post. I think  blogging is just another skill set you have to learn.  And it takes time to be comfortable.  I am in the learning the skill set stage.     I enjoy reading many of the posts,  but so far  the only things I really feel comfortable talking about is local stuff about my town and market.

Connie - I used to think that way - to blog to get featured.  But I got over it.  Now, it does not matter to me.  I blog because I want to share my thoughts.  I also want to talk about local stuffs.

I don't blog for gold stars and stuff like that. I blog to help myself learn more about real estate and to educate potential clients. Gold stars seem like the Cabbage Patch crazy of the 1980s : everyone wanted one but there very few were there to go around. Weird complaining and mini frenzies ensued.  And in cases like that I ask myself: Will this matter in five years? --------> No, it won't.

I sometimes wonder that, too. Sometimes it seems the same people get featured, such as todayl. One blogger has 2 featured posts on the front page. They're both good posts but I have to wonder, why not spread some of the gold stars around?

Funny that I wrote that post late at night when I was too tired ... so I'm guessing it made me sound more natural, more relaxed. Whatever, I write what I think people will want to read ... or for realtors, want to be aware of from my handyman business perspective.

I don't ever write catchy titles unless it is members only. For a public post my main concern is SEO. I want to pick a title that will bring traffic and business. I am constantly scratching me head at the titles I see people use. This is one of the most important factors for making your material get noticed. Why lose that opportunity with making some silly title that may get you noticed here but not by the masses.

Connie...

I've suggested to many of the Newer Bloggers that they team up and critique each other. That will definately hasten the time it takes to get the hang of it all. As this is a new concept I don't know whether it's working. I am hoping that a few honest critiques from a friend won't hurt anyone. But hey, I've seen stranger things happen :)

Connie, a very good post, as all have said. I am torn, I am blogging to get noticed with clients, no kidding. I am hooked on all the good stuff I have already learned here, and I agree with Sheldon, the comments are great. Although TLW did a GREAT post on speed commenting, sometimes it is a good thing for someone to say, hi, good job. Just my ego I guess.

On the other hand, like Bill said, most of my public blogs are for the public. The one good thing is that comments made here do appear on my outside blog too, so if the blog is being read by locals, they will see that people are reading and commenting on my blogs.

I do comment on just about everything I read for those reasons.

So, having said all that, I guess I am torn about this whole blogging thing, LOL. Never-mind me. I will shut up now.

Evening Connie - Great points and very solid content.  While it's nice to be "recognized"hopefully the authors motive is the desire to truly share information.  On the other hand I have seen some posts make it as "featured" and the content simply doesn't appear justified.  Anyway, that's just my 2 cents.

Connie - I couldn't agree with you more.  As a newbie, I was anxious to get that first gold star feature and wrote a couple of posts that I thought were gold star worthy but apparently no one else thought so. At that point, I just started writing to the people I wanted to attact - my local market here in Ventura County (SoCA).

Shortly thereafter, I received my first featured post for Hyper Local Hump Day.  Go figure.  These days, I stick to writing to my local market and occassonally, a members only post.  If I get featured great, if I don't that's ok too because I know I'm getting more exposure to my local market, which is the reason I joined AR in the first place.  Not to get gold stars.

The best thing about features is the discussion and the comments that follow. Okay, yes, it feels great to be featured, and I think we have some wonderful writers here on AR.

Connie,

Of course it is nice to get one of those stars every so often, but that ought to be of secondary importance. We are here primarily to market our real estate, mortgage and other services to consumers. Posts should be created with that in mind.

Connie,

We all tried to write a feature, at least once. Never worked. When I think my blog post is a great candidate, it hardly gets any comments. And then i get the star, and I am genuinely surprised. It als odoes not mean that my other blog was any worse.

It is not a science. So I long ago quit planning n a start, but keep planning on a good blog, and that's where my aspirations are.

Very good post. I was thinking about it a lot
