barbara s duncancom: Darla Ino, White County Regional Library Director, accepts gift. - 03/27/24 01:33 PM

Searcy AR grows. Library grows also.
Barbara S Duncan, that's me, presented a lovely drawing of Searcy's first library to Darla Ino, Library Director of the White County Regional Library System.  The present library (remember it is moving to a larger one) did not have a picture of the first library which was small and charming in Spring Park.  Barbara offered them this framed print and they seemed glad to have it. It will be displayed in their "historic" room that has lots of interesting items.  I, Barbara, just wrote a blog with a postcard picture of the library.  Click to see … (3 comments)

barbara s duncancom: More oldies from 1979-1980. M D Faith Downtown Searcy AR pictures. - 02/03/23 12:47 PM

We have shown several pictures in the last few weeks that were taken by REALTOR  M. D. Faith in Searcy AR.  The pictures were taken around 1979 or 1980.  Here are two more, pretty close neighbors.  Top is one to be loved and cherished, the Legion Hut, that is very historic.  Second is (look closely) First National Bank.  It is still there.....lovely.....but with a new name.
The Legion Hut was built in 1934 and has a long history.  Go here https://www.whitecountyhistory.net/legion-hut and read more about its history. It is a treasure that we hope to uphold.  The First National Bank building has … (2 comments)

barbara s duncancom: Locket picture found at estate sale. Historic photo jewelry. - 06/21/21 01:55 PM

This little jewel caught my eye at a recent estate sale.  The size is 2.5" by 3" and has a picture of a lady who seems to have on one of those head scarfs that were worn during World War II. So this may have been designed as a locket for wearing around the neck.  On the back it has a means to wear it in either direction with a chain or ribbon.
I have never seen one just like it and it is very interesting.  Plastic covers the picture which seems to have been slid into position and firmly held in … (3 comments)

barbara s duncancom: Classy women of Searcy AR. How many do you remember? - 07/01/18 05:28 PM

Where they were?  What they were doing?  Why they were together?
I don't know.  (But Searcy Sleuths will know.)   I do recognize lots of the ladies.  In fact, I recognize almost all of them but can't recall the names.  Definitely, they were on a nice brick porch and they were all dressed up.  I don't believe I see a single pair of pants in the picture so it dates back a good distance.  It might be fun for you to pinpoint your favorites in this picture!

barbara s duncancom: Galloway College. Searcy AR. For 44 years a great girl's school - 04/26/15 10:04 AM
We see lots of pictures of the old Galloway College building in Searcy AR.  It was one impressive building as you can see below.  Galloway was reported to be the finest cultural opportunity college for girls in the country.  The depression in the 30's contributed to its being forced to close in 1933.  It was open from 1889 until 1933.
I was delighted to receive a gift this week of a Galloway College yearbook.  It is called the Gallowegian and it was given to me by a person who reads my blogs and enjoys some of the historical photos that we … (0 comments)

barbara s duncancom: Hey! That's cheatin'!!!! - 04/01/09 02:26 PM
I had reason to get on the net and search for homes in a little Georgia town.  I looked on realtor.com and did a search.
I know what it costs to be on realtor.com with enhanced listings.  I paid a lot to be able to display 25 photos of each listing.  Then you pay extra for your listing to pull up as a featured property.
Imagine my surprise when this house pulled up and displayed 4 pictures of the same house.  In the middle was a circle saying "See all 25 photos."
You guessed it!  This agent had 25 pictures all just alike!!  … (112 comments)

barbara s duncancom: We get taught some things at our weekly MLS meeting. - 02/25/09 11:14 PM
Most of us don't know how to use our MLS to its fullest value.  I asked an agent this morning if she used the "rubber band" search.
"What's the rubber band search?" she responded.
Up until two weeks or so ago I also didn't use it because it was not something I had to have.  Searching in one area of our Searcy AR town, however, is difficult because it is not composed of one subdivision but it is considered an area.  Using the rubber band to search I could pull up everything in that area, so I called one of our … (7 comments)

barbara s duncancom: MLS is not just for selling listings. Cooperation is involved in other ways. - 02/17/09 02:46 AM
Lots of foreclosure properties are coming in.  Lots of real estate agents are assigned to get them ready for marketing.  I'm among that lot.
One of the main things we have to do is find comparable sales and comparable listings.  We expect our MLS to be helpful in giving us that information.
Appraisers use the MLS for the same reason.  Buyer's agents might use the MLS for comps to make sure the buyer is informed on value.
Certain questions are asked on the broker's professional opinion of value (BPO).  For instance one is energy efficiency.  This is not a requirement in … (61 comments)

barbara s duncancom: Rip Van Winkle Motel & Cafe Searcy Arkansas Hwy 64-67 - 01/27/09 11:36 PM

You can't say that this is not a creative name for a motel!  Rip Van Winkle slept for 20 years and woke up and found everything different!
Wikipedia says,
The story of Rip Van Winkle is set in the years before and after the American Revolutionary War. Rip Van Winkle, a villager of Dutch descent, lives in a nice village at the foot of New York's Catskill Mountains. An amiable man whose home and farm suffer from his lazy neglect, he is loved by all but his wife. One autumn day he escapes his nagging wife by wandering up the … (23 comments)
