cell phones: Before cell phones. Before computers. The fun for kids? Good examples. - 12/14/23 12:47 PM

Old Searcy AR fun!
What did kids do before they lived with computers and cell phones?  Stumbling upon a memory is always fun.  That happened to me today.  This wonderful aerial view of a husband-built tree house without being attached to a tree is a pleasure.
I moved to Searcy in 1967 and lived on McRae Street.  Hubby built this tree house (as we called it) for the kids.  I bought this trampoline and it seemed to be the first one in Searcy AR based on its popularity.  Two kids are on it in this photo. The kids could drag it from … (8 comments)

cell phones: Quick! Don't look closely! What are these kids doing? - 05/22/17 01:19 PM

OK!  Quickly!  What are these students doing?  The first thing I thought of was cell phones!  They appear to be checking their messages, checking email, paying no attention to their friends except with their phones!  Sure looks that way.....even though it was 1969 and they were posing for the Searcy Lion yearbook, it made me think of today!
Actually, I assume they got free treats of ice cream or milk.  Styles were different and things never stay the same.  Some clever photoshop expert could just change cups to phones and put leggings on the girls and we'd be current!  Perhaps Super Sleuth … (13 comments)

cell phones: Bill collectors and friends are having a tough time finding the person they need. - 03/28/10 02:08 AM
Our landline rings.  Husband answers and they ask for Barbara Duncan.
I pick it up.  "Is this Barbara Duncan?  I am calling to collect an unpaid debt.  I need to tell you that anything you say can be used against you."
I listen to see what else she has to say.
Then I ask her very politely, "Well, what are you calling about?"
She says it is an account with some bank or finance company or credit card company.  I can't remember the exact words.
I have to say to her, "Ma'am, I don't have an account with that company.  You have the … (26 comments)

cell phones: Landline phones are being dropped. How are we going to handle this???? - 01/21/10 12:10 AM
I waved at my neighbor last week.
Their car is in the driveway.
Their dog still barks.  Their cat visits my yard.  They obviously still live beside me.
Tonight, I looked up their number in the phone book and dialed it.  I needed to ask them a neighborhood question.
"The number you have dialed has been disconnected."
There it has happened again!!  Those neighbors have probably decided that the landline is no longer needed.  They have cell phones.  Why pay that extra expense monthly for a landline?
As a matter of fact, hubby asked me two days ago if we REALLY … (35 comments)

cell phones: Duncan New & Used Cars lot in Searcy Arkansas on a snow day. - 05/16/09 12:19 AM

A recent newspaper article pointed out that cell phones have now surpassed the households opting for landlines.  Fewer and fewer families are having landlines.  They are dropping the landlines and choosing cellphones only.  Verizon Communications Inc reported 39 million landline customers in March 2008 and 35 million a year later.
Over the same period Verizon's wireless customers grew from 67 million to 87 million!  Some of those came from the company's acquisition of Alltel Crop.  But the amazing thing is that many are going cell phone only.  It saves money.
I hate that I can't go to … (20 comments)
