remax: Arkansas used to have the best strawberries in the world. Lots of pickers were required. - 05/09/11 03:09 PM
Strawberries are ripe right now around Searcy Arkansas.  Driving from Searcy Arkansas to Bald Knob Arkansas (which used to be called the strawberry capital of the world) along the old highway will possibly find lots of people with freshly-picked strawberries for sale.
They're pretty expensive this year, probably about $4 a quart.  Folks who have a wild desire for strawberries are going to have to pay dearly.
An old family diary indicated that the teenage girl and two of her friends were going to McRae to stay at the home of a family and pick berries.  They stayed a few days and didn't … (19 comments)

remax: Who needs a stop sign with this parade? Ducks in Searcy Arkansas. Ugly duckling? - 02/24/11 12:34 PM
Heading to work!!
Gotta hurry!
What the devil!!!
Look who is holding up traffic?
Who do these arrogant little fellers think they are?

Since they have the road blocked I might as well look them over.  Looks as if there is one "odd duck."  Or an "ugly duckling."   Or is that just the way a duck looks before it matures.

One thing this little parade made me do is slow down, stop, look and see the beauty of our everyday life.

remax: Look at the curves on this house! East Market beauty Searcy Arkansas. - 02/18/11 12:32 PM
You've got your own route to your destination?  Right?  So have I.  I drive down East Market Street near Harding University everyday.  Each day I compare the lovely old houses on the North side vs. the apartments and changes on the South side.
I especially like this house.  The court house says it was built in 1945.

It has more curves than a fashion model!  Over the windows, over the doors, and even the roof line curves.  It appears to be a delightful mixture of brick, rock and stucco.
But for the past few days as I drive by … (42 comments)

remax: Searcy Arkansas is on the grow again! New subdivision on Country Club Road. - 02/15/11 12:50 PM
The land is being cleared on Country Club Road for a big new subdivision.  I admit that I don't have all the particulars yet but you can sure tell something is going on when you drive from West Beebe Capps up Country Club Road.  It has always been a pretty narrow and tight road with hills and now it is worse!
Big equipment and trucks and people are turning in and out to clear the land for Searcy's very newest subdivision.  It is right across the street from the property that still has horses in town and is blessed by rainbows.  … (7 comments)

remax: Another puzzle for Searcy Arkansas Sleuths. What are these girls doing? - 02/12/11 03:31 AM
Stumbling across this picture which shows action going on brought back a lot of old memories.
Seems that I remember this game but don't remember being any good at it.  I was always a scaredy-cat as the kids used to call each other when they were doing a "double-dog-dare" and you refused to do it.
Since I grew up in another state, I'm wondering if you Searcy Arkansas folks called it the same thing we did.  And how strange to actually find an old picture of these dressed up kids playing.

remax: Searcy High School group of stars from school play. Back in the 50's tonight. - 02/11/11 06:03 AM
This old newspaper article was found in a pile of saved things.  It dates back to the 50's and includes a few people who have remained in Searcy.  Because the writing underneath is hard to read, let me tell you who they were.
They were members of the Senior Class.  Front row, left to right, Ann Ward, Bill Green, Bobby Maddox and Margaret Smith.  Center row, Jack Young, Susan Jones, John Pruitt.  Back row, Sue Dean, Betty Lynn Sowell, Glenn Elliott, Glenda Love, Larry haile, Linda Chambliss, Lou Ann Morgan, Gayle Triplett, and Mira Van Patten.
Bet the play was a … (18 comments)

remax: A child's photographic essay of a day on a farm. Searcy Arkansas pasture from the 70's. - 02/10/11 01:31 AM
This story was written by a very young child who was taking photography as a project in 4H and had to do a photographic story.  Unfortunately both of the barns shown here have burned due to lightning.  The photographs here have suffered a little from the scanning and definitely I needed to keep the lettering telling about the day.  If you'd like, you Searcy Sleuths can identify the people in the picture.  I'm the proud mom of the author of this fine photographic essay.

remax: Judsonia card from 1910 now on ebay. Train, wagons, strawberries and a car! - 02/06/11 01:26 PM
This card is for sale on ebay right now.  It is a great one for history and I hope Judsonia will buy it.

It reads, "We saw a string of wagons like this picture.  Mr. Longin took a picture of them."
Then the card is labeled Judsonia Ark. Monday May 2 -10.  14 cars 7270 cases srawberries.
It looks as if this picture was taken along the railroad tract in what is now called Depot Town.  I did a blog a few weeks ago showing an old store in this area.  It must have been strawberry season and folks must … (32 comments)

remax: Last rites are being held right here on this blog site. Deaths on Center Street, Searcy AR. - 02/04/11 01:12 PM
We might as well say our final good-byes to these two houses on East Center Street.  Here is what is left of them.  First is 411 East Center.

Second is 403 E Center.

403 East Center was born in 1915 and lived a peaceful existence until 2011.  Just days ago I saw people living there.  I had to take my final picture from county data because we had no warning of the quick death.  I really liked the chimney and the little eyebrows.  It sold back in 1991 through a real estate firm and two times since then.

remax: Does anyone think this is funny? What will Arkanasas do to catch up? - 02/02/11 01:13 PM
In the Arkansas Democrat Gazette this morning under the column title In the news was this short bit of news.
Pat Patterson, mayor of Oxford, Miss., said the state has approved limited liquor sales in the town on a few Sundays, specifically Mother's Day, Father's Day, the Sundays nearest University of Mississippi football games and, when they fall on Sundays, Valentine's Day and New Year's Eve.
You may have to reread it to find the humor.  I've been laughing all day.  Arkansas does NOT allow any liquor sales on Sunday.

remax: Anyone remember this old filling station on Main street Searcy Arkansas? - 01/31/11 01:09 PM
WR Glass has occupied this building in Searcy Arkansas for many years.  They have either moved or closed their business because this old building is now empty.
It has intrigued me for years.  Look at the columns.  Are those Art Deco?  Look at the tile.  There has to be a history here that our Searcy Sleuths can uncover.  This one was down the street from the Pershing Stationwhich we've blogged about.  Was it also a filling station?  Perhaps it was a store.
Right now it is just a small forlorn building on a busy corner but we need to explore it … (38 comments)

remax: Whew.....it appears the Margaret Pope house, Searcy Arkansas, lives on. - 01/28/11 12:57 PM
The Margaret Pope house in Searcy Arkansas is on Market Street and we drive by it all the time.  It looked like this for a long time.

One day I drove by and did a double-take as I saw big construction happening.....or deconstruction possibly.

The work went on and on and on.  Stucco came off the front.  The house got leveled.  And I kept worrying because I thought I'd drive by and the house would be smashed.  Now, however, it looks like this.

And curtains have gone up.  People have vehicles parked in the yard.  I believe it … (13 comments)

remax: Thank you, Penny Choate, for restoring a grand old house on Race Street, Searcy AR - 01/22/11 03:52 AM
One could tell something was going on!  Look at the men in those buckets cutting those giant trees.

Sure nuff!  Word was out that the old Tom Watkins house located at the corner of North Oak and East Race in Searcy Arkansas, built in the early 20's, had been bought and was to be restored by Attorney Penny Choate of the Choate Law Firm.
Everyone cheered!  We were all afraid that the house would be hit by the wrecker's ball.  As soon as Attorney Choate had the trees cleared, she got the painters out and started working on the outside.  … (10 comments)

remax: Corner of McRae and Sowell Streets Searcy AR - 01/19/11 12:40 PM
These kids were playing in the yard in the 40's.  The private street that you are seeing led to the corner of Sowell and McRae, in Searcy Arkansas, a square corner.  In the distance you can see a house that is still there and lived in.  It was a rock house with a huge barn, outbuildings, a garden and everything you'd need to be country.

Time goes on.  The barn is gone.  But today the rock house is still there. There is a newer brick house beside it.  The brick house is a 50's ranch house.

Here's a closer view of the rock … (13 comments)

remax: We haven't had so much fun with snow since 1972? Old Sowell Street picture. - 01/13/11 08:21 AM
We have just had snow in Searcy Arkansas.  Snow in Searcy means no schools, kids are free to go build snowmen, slide down hills, romp with the pups, throw snowballs and then come in dripping snow and ice and make a big mess in the house.  Then they get dried off, warmed up and they are out the door again.  It's pretty tiring to a mom.  I remember.  I also remember living at the end of this road and this hill and remember when the road would be frozen and kids would come sledding into the driveway.
That little house at … (16 comments)

remax: 40's style. Did kids have a fashion sense then? Mystery for Searcy Sleuths. - 01/10/11 11:27 AM
The Searcy Sleuths love a challenge.  Therefore I'm giving them another one with these two pictures of a charming group of kids.
The boy has evidently found his own style.  One pant's leg is rolled higher than the other.  Speaking to the kid reveals that it was not a style.  So do you know why this was done?  My thinking is that cowboy boots were the style.  Every kid would have wanted a pair.  This little girl wore hers with lots of flair.  I don't know about you but personally I like that cap thrown way back rather than the way … (16 comments)

remax: Winning girl's softball team 1973 in Searcy Arkansas. - 01/09/11 10:18 AM

Girl's sports finally got back to Searcy Arkansas.  Having been devoid of anything for girls to do for several years, Mayor Leslie Carmichael appointed a Parks and Recreation Committee to employ a director and supervise the program.  This was on Dec 7, 1971.  Appointed to the committee were James Ahlf, Luther Hardin, Richard Hall, Mrs. Rodger Duncan (ladies still hadn't gained their own identity at that time) and Mrs. Jack Gardner.
The hired director was supposed to form a girl's softball program as his very first act and he did.  The girl's loved it.  They flocked to the program and the … (12 comments)

remax: In memory of Mom & Pop grocery stores everywhere. Where was this one? Judsonia AR - 01/05/11 12:45 PM
Blogging makes you sit up and take notice.  And if you have a camera you may sit up, take notice and snap a picture.
 As I did today.

My White County Sleuths haven't had a puzzle in a few weeks so let's see if they can tell me where this is.  It has been around for a long time, no doubt about that.  I've always thought this was a charming little old grocery store.  When it closed down, I don't know, but the building and the signs are still there.
So, Searcy Sleuths, can you locate this one?

remax: Bald Knob Arkansas revisited. Good use of an old filling station. - 12/28/10 12:21 PM
Bald Knob is a small town approximately 12 miles from Searcy Arkansas, the White County seat.  Bald Knob grows on you.  Despite the funny name, the town is a treasure with good places to eat, an appreciation for history, and friendly folks.
I bought this old card.

It shows the Market Cafe.  The Market Cafe is still in existence with a loyal clientele.  Look behind the cafe. See that Market Station filling station?  It's still there also.

But now it has a new service.  It's the Bald Knob Fire Department!  Bald Knob appreciated the old rock architecture and put … (35 comments)

remax: Another landmark going down. More progress in Searcy Arkansas. - 12/23/10 03:47 AM
Rumor had it that the square corner of Sawmill Road and Country Club Road East in Searcy Arkansas had been sold for a HUGE amount of money.
What's a square corner?  Well, I've heard that they go back so far that when roads were being made the old farmer would say, "You aint going through my pasture but you can go around the edge of it."  Thus the corner could be sharp and square.  In Arkansas we still have quite a few of them.
On this square corner was an old horse and his barn.  I watched him for years as I made … (25 comments)
