tx: Pickin-And-A-Grinnin At The Sonlight Apple Orchard - 10/04/10 09:00 AM
Ahhhhhhhhhh yes...it's that time of year where the weather gets a little cooler and signs of harvesting are everywhere...especially with apple orchards.  You hafta look long and hard to find pick-your-own apple orchards in Texas in that our soil isn't prime for growing apple trees.  Even so...there are a few orchards that found the sweet spot for growing apple trees and are growing some fine apples.  One such orchard is the Sonlight Apple Orchard in Mason, TX...just about an hour and a half north of Boerne, TX and about an hour due west of Austin, TX.  Makes for a nice family day … (9 comments)

tx: Local Boerne, TX Puppy Makes Good--Chosen to Act In Heart Warming Movie--"Cooper" - 09/04/10 05:21 AM

Call it the "perfect storm" or just fate...but two weeks ago Bell Domino Marble's parents, Claire and Larry, were called to see if Bell would be willing to play the younger version of a dog named Cooper in a production being shot in San Antonio.  The producers of the film had got a picture of Bell from Catherine Laria, border collie trainer and owner of K9 Country Club.  They had originally called her to see if she had a puppy that would fit the part.  She didn't...but remembered that Claire and Larry Marble had just got a border collie puppy … (3 comments)

tx: If Cukes Could Talk... - 08/26/10 02:42 AM
I love my garden.  It was only weeks ago that seeds were planted and watered and now plants are reaching for the skies and vines are slowly creeping up the trellises we built for them.  I have a morning ritual of walking the paths of my garden each morning to see what progress has been made while I was sleeping.  One particular morning last week I noticed that one of our cucumber plants had put out a squiggly arm to grab the trellis.  The light-green-string-like arm seemed weak, at best, but the grip it had on the trellis was undeniably strong.

tx: Raise your own laying hens???...Eggs-actly! - 08/18/10 06:07 PM
"Egg recall tied to salmonella grows to 380 million" Associated Press

Kind of a scary headline to read when more than 217,424,000 eggs are consumed a day in America.  On average, each person eats approximately 256 eggs a year.  When you break that down that's 21 dozen eggs a year per person...and that's not even counting the number of eggs used in baking or other foods we eat.  With the price of nearly $3 a dozen...that can add up for a family of five.  So...what if you raised your own eggs?  Seem too hard?  Not really...  You actually might … (8 comments)

tx: Hey...what's a few hurdles to jump anyway??? - 08/18/10 04:20 AM

No one, in my 18 years in the real estate industry, said it would be easy...  Being the eternal optimist I am...I tossed that notion aside and plunged forward into my career.  Granted there were a few hurdles along the way...but overall the journey hasn't been bad.  I credit that largely to my passion and love for what I do and the incredible people I have met along the way.  Even so...every now and then...one of the "hurdles" can really put the kabash on your momentum.
About three weeks ago I was on my way to my second showing of … (6 comments)

tx: Texas Jump Off at Hunter's Classic This Weekend in San Antonio! - 08/12/10 07:08 AM
One lazy Sunday afternoon I was surfing through the channels when I landed on ESPN and a Dock Dog Competition...  I was immediately hooked as I watched dogs of every breed compete in what they loved best...retrieving an object in water.  Who among us doesn't get excited when our dog retrieves anything???  And then to add the element of doing it in the water...well...that's just down right genius!
I have never been to a dock dog competition in person...but I finally will get my opportunity this weekend at the Texas Hunting Outdoor Classic at the Freeman Expo Hall in San Antonio, … (2 comments)

tx: What Are You Doing To Think Outside Your Marketing Box? - 08/11/10 06:02 AM
Four brave women attended my first "Cookin With A Rural Attitude" class last Thursday...  They were invited because I knew that they would be honest and give me great feedback on how best to do the class so that those attending would have fun and I could expand my client base.  For those who may be reading this blog for the first time...I am new to the San Antonio/Boerne area...but not new to real estate.  In fact, I have 18 years of experience under my belt.  Experience is great...but if you don't know anyone...it's hard to get the word out that … (6 comments)

tx: South Texas Ranch Rodeo--A Taste of the Old West Coming To Boerne, TX This Weekend - 07/28/10 04:10 AM
Back in the day...or at least "my day"...kids like myself couldn't wait for the times when we could watch shows like Roy Rogers, Sky King, Bonanza, The Rifleman, Wagon Train and Gunsmoke.  It wouldn't be unusual to see scenes in those programs where there would be a "friendly" competition to see who could rope the best or brand their steer the fastest.  To me it was a fantasy I only dreamed of...but here in South Texas it's been going on for decades.

If you have ever wondered just what real working cowboys do during their work week...then you need to take the … (4 comments)

tx: How Does "Your" Garden Grow? - 07/26/10 04:30 AM
For those of you that don't live in Texas...we garden here year round...  We recently moved to our new place just outside of Boerne, Texas and it came complete with 10 laying chickens and a wannabe garden.  The folks that owned the place before us had good intentions of having a beautiful raised bed garden, but a job opportunity took them elsewhere and all that was left were some good bones for us to work with.
Larry and I both saw the potential...but we also saw all the work it was gonna take to put in the garden.  The soil was rocky … (12 comments)

tx: A Pullet's' Progress Part 2--It's Like Potty Training All Over Again...Except Without the Potty - 07/15/10 04:31 AM
I remember getting knots in my stomach as I would face each day of potty training my kids...  I knew I needed to be consistent to make it work.  The trouble was...I had a hard time being consistent.  Not because I didn't want to be...but because I had two toddlers and a baby to keep track of in the midst of trying to get across basic principles to my kids on the art of making a "poo poo in the potty".  Okay...so take that angst times eleven...and you will see my dilema with my pullets (ever-growing-hens-to-be).
When we last left our … (3 comments)

tx: Down On The Farm Radio Website Launched Today! - 07/08/10 03:43 PM

It's been a long time coming...but my husband's website for his Ag news radio program is finally live!  Larry has been hosting the most popular farm and ranch program in Texas, covering 100,000 square miles, for nearly 14 years.  He took the show from a 15 minute spot on KKYX-680 AM to full hour and now thousands of top producers listen to his show every day from 12:05-1:00p.m..  If you are a farmer or rancher the show is essential for the latest market reports as well as auction prices.  If you are a hobby farmer, wannabe, or are just interested in the rural lifestyle...there's … (4 comments)

tx: Good Ol Texas Mustang Grapes...From Backyard to Jelly Jar - 07/05/10 03:08 AM
With all the rain we have had this year I just KNEW that there would be a good mustang grape crop...so I have been putting the word out to all my friends that if they had grapes...I wanted them.  I also said I would gladly exchange my grape jelly for their grapes.  Seems like an even trade...doesn't it???
I was making one of those requests to our new friend Joe, of the Broke Stone Pizza Company in Boerne, TX just a couple of days ago.  He was telling me that he hadn't seen any...yet...but did have some figs that he would … (6 comments)

tx: Put the brakes on...stop...get out of the car...and take a look. - 07/04/10 04:41 AM
My husband and I took a horse ride down our country road just outside Boerne, TX...only this time we went the opposite direction that we normally would take.  I have driven  flown by this stretch of road hundreds of times and thought I knew each house and farm along the way...until today.  It's amazing how different things look going zero miles an hour vs 45 miles an hour.
"Dang, honey...look how pretty that place is.  I never knew they had a view from their back porch".
With each step our horses took I was able to see things I never saw … (11 comments)

tx: A Pullet's Progress--The Gripping Story Of A Chick's Journey to Hen-dom - 06/29/10 12:28 PM
She was just a young chick...who pecked herself into this world about 8 weeks ago.  Little did she know that her brief life at St. Hedwig's Feed store would lead her to the ride of her life on the Marble Farm in Boerne, TX.  She was just three weeks old when this towering man in a cowboy hat chose her...among 11 others to be squished into a cardboard box.  There was a commotion amongst the chicks...lots of peeping and lots of confussion.  They all seemed to be speaking the same language...but they were so frightened that they didn't have any idea what … (6 comments)

tx: Back In The Saddle Again...Um...Ouch? - 06/28/10 08:58 AM

Today was my first day back in the saddle again...literally.  All I can say is...ouch!  It all started with my husband taking a couple of much needed vacation days.  We had hoped to go out of town for some down time...but, due to things being a little tight financially...we decided to enjoy our time here at home.  We've only been married for a couple of years and have talked about taking a trail ride (of sorts) together on our horses, Freckles and Buckshot.  Well...as you all know...finding time to saddle up and ride is a little hard to do.  But today...we saddled up … (5 comments)

tx: Broken Stone Pizza Co.-- Pizza The Way It Was Meant To Be - 06/16/10 03:52 AM
I will simply never tire of eating pizza.  Not sure where that craving came from...but I have to contend with it nonetheless.  The problem with that craving is there are few reeeeeally good pizza restaurants in Texas...but more specifically in Boerne, Texas.  No doubt, Texans have a corner on Mexican and Tex-Mex foods, but struggle in the area of truly good pizza.
Move over Dominos and every other pizza wannabe...the Broke Stone Pizza Company is in the house.  I had seen a banner out in front of their location on 1022 N. Main Street in Boerne, TX and commented to my sister..."Gosh, … (0 comments)

tx: It Takes a Village and a Front End Loader...To Make Agarita Jelly - 06/04/10 05:21 AM
I recently posted two blogs on how to make agarita jelly...  Oh...you missed them???  Guess you're not using agarita jelly recipes to close that deal this week...eh?  In any event...they actually got some great responses including folks from "outside" the Active Rain community.  (Yes...it actually works!)
One of the response I got was from a fellow realtor in Leakey, Texas, a little town on the Frio River about an hour from where I live in Boerne, TX.  He recently bought a 59 acre place and saw that his land was covered with a bumper crop of agarita berries.  He had decided … (2 comments)

tx: Log Blog--If Men Were Wrens - 03/10/10 02:52 AM
Last spring I noticed a wren feverishly pulling apart my coconut based hanging basket to make his own little nest in the bush around the corner from my home office near Bergheim, TX.  It was fascinating to watch this little guy work.  I looked forward to seeing him each morning and finally decided to take a look at his progress.  Much to my surprise...the nest was complete...in tact...and ready to go...yet, no bird.  Hmmm...wonder what happened?
The following day, I noticed Mr. Wren AGAIN tearing apart my coconut based hanging basket but flying a different direction.  I thought..."Okay...I am going to find … (4 comments)

tx: Log Blog-O'Briens--Worth the Drive. - 02/08/10 04:01 AM

There's not much in Bergheim...or at least in what most think Bergheim is.  I legally live in Boerne, TX...but am closer to what most refer as Bergheim.  And...when I refer to Bergheim...I am thinking of the corner of Highway 46 and 3351.  Not much there...a Valero station, Taquitos, a hair salon, Bergheim Cellars, the Bergheim General Store...and of course, O'Briens.
My first exposure to O'Briens was one of my first dates with my now husband, Larry.  We were looking for homes for me to rent when we decided to take a break and go eat.  I was immediately charmed by … (2 comments)

It doesn't mean you have to give up your job...just give up living 10 feet away from your neighbor or starting your own garden or have that horse you've always dreamed of. I have been a licensed Realtor for nearly 18 years with experience in new home construction, (both production and custom), log homes, and helping folks live the rural lifestyle. It would be my extreme pleasure to help you realize your dream.
