energy efficiency: Why is a HERS Score Important to You? - 06/21/21 04:29 AM
A HERS RATING CAN SAY A LOT ABOUT A HOUSEThe HERS Index or, the Home Energy Rating System is simply an analysis of a home’s energy efficiency per the HERS Index. This index is the nationally recognized scoring system for measuring a home’s energy performance. Many cities and some states either require or will be requiring that the test to determine a HERS Index Score be completed on a newly constructed home. In many cases, there are certain certification programs that require a specific HERS Score to be attained to meet a specified certification level. However, most states and cities don’t have … (3 comments)

energy efficiency: On the Path to a Zero Energy Home: Highly Insulated Windows and Doors - 01/07/19 03:07 AM
Windows and doors can be the big holes in what is otherwise a very well insulated home with an airtight building envelope. You can better control heat loss and heat gain by using the right doors and windows in your new home. An often overlooked aspect of windows and doors is selecting the right size and correctly orienting them in the home based on the homes siting on the building lot. Here is a primer on windows and doors for an affordable zero energy ready home.
WINDOW PERFORMANCE (A.K.A. ENERGY EFFICIENCY)  Windows are extremely important when it comes to designing energy efficiency into our home. … (2 comments)

energy efficiency: On the Path to a Zero Energy Home: Energy Efficient Fresh Air - 11/12/18 03:51 AM
In the past, you may have heard that a home can be “too tight”… that a home needs to breathe. The issue isn’t that a home can be too tight. A home doesn’t need to breathe but people do! Over the past several years we have seen new building codes come into place that requires higher home energy efficiency. Building science has proven over many years that super insulating and super sealing a home is only part of the equation when creating an energy efficient home. While many homeowners and contractors championed these two items as the holy grail of energy efficiency, bad things happen if you stop there. The … (1 comments)

energy efficiency: What to Expect When You're Expecting... a Modular Home - 10/15/18 03:12 AM
The term “modular home” is really a misnomer. Modular actually describes a method of construction, not a type of home. Some may think the difference is trivial, but it’s not. A home built using modular construction is built to the same building code as a home that is built onsite, however it is built offsite in modules and assembled in LEGO-like fashion on a foundation. The modular construction process creates a home that is superior in construction to one that is built onsite. The process produces a home that is built quickly, at a consistent level of quality, and at the … (2 comments)

energy efficiency: What is a Blower Door Test? - 08/20/18 04:26 AM
States are slowly adopting more stringent requirements for energy efficiency. They have been doing this by adopting recent building code updates which means homes have to perform better. The question is, how do you measure energy efficiency and… what do you measure it against to know if results are good or bad? Introducing the blower door test! A blower door test is used to help determine a home’s airtightness. The key premise is that a home with lots of holes lets in lots of air thereby costing more to heat or cool. Heating and cooling is one of the highest consumers of … (0 comments)

energy efficiency: R-Value versus U-Value, Removing the Mystery - 05/21/18 03:50 AM
When you start to think about building a custom home, most home buyer’s thoughts don’t drift towards designing for energy efficiency. They want tall ceilings, high roof pitches, and lots of windows. With today’s modern modular construction, you can have all of that and more. However, there may be a cost in terms of a home’s energy performance based on its design. That’s when you start to hear terms such as R-value and U-value. For most, these terms are confusing. What do they mean and why should they be important to you? Let’s demystify these two commonly used terms.
FIRST, IT’S ALL ABOUT … (1 comments)

energy efficiency: Modular Construction and Mass Customization: Bringing You Better Homes - 10/30/17 04:35 AM
Mass customization is a concept to manufacture a relatively high volume of product options for a relatively large market that demands customization, without tradeoffs in cost, delivery, and quality. Modular construction is the term used to describe the use of factory-produced building modules that are delivered to a site and then assembled into a building. By combining the modular construction method with the mass customization concept, custom home building is on the cusp of seeing its first great leap forward in 200 years.
THE MODULAR CONSTRUCTION (R)EVOLUTIONMany people first think of the Modern Homes Series offered by the Sears Roebuck Company as the first modular built … (3 comments)

energy efficiency: Home Appraisals Will Soon Include HERS Scores - 03/07/17 03:36 PM
The RESNET HERS Index is the industry standard by which a home's energy efficiency is measured. A new partnership between the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET) and the Appraisal Institute plans to include Home Energy Rating System (HERS) scores in appraisals. A HERS Score allows buyers to evaluate a home's energy efficiency. The lower the score the more energy efficient the home. By adding the score to home appraisals, consumers purchasing a home with a better score can get a better valuation because the home they are buying is more energy efficient. A more energy efficient home costs less to own!
In this partnership, RESNET’s database of HERS-rated homes will be available … (2 comments)
