As fires once again rage in Sonoma County, not far north of San Francisco, a hazy sky was the view from my San Francisco condo today. Even eerier, as night has fallen there are no lights visible in Sausalito and Tiburon, two Marin County towns just north of the Golden Gate Bridge. With hot, dry, gusty winds blowing, PG&E has cut power to close to 1 million people in the state in an attempt to lessen further fire danger. Mandatory evacuations are in place for thousands of people.

This area, 1-1/2 hours north of San Francisco and only 8 miles from the Pacific Ocean, is ideal for growing pinot noir grapes, and Halleck Vineyard has mastered the art of producing award-winning pinots.
No open houses for me this afternoon, so I was able to be part of a group of 8 friends at a private wine tasting presided over by one of the owners and vintners, Jennifer Halleck. The prelude to pours of 5 different pinots was a tasting of their Sauvignon Blanc and a Dry Gewurztraminer, both gems.

sonoma county: Wild fires in California's San Francisco Bay Area - 09/27/16 09:28 AM
While much of the country is seeing cooler temperatures after a sizzling-hot summer, here in California we're in the midst of our wild fire season.
The recent heat wave in the San Francisco Bay Area has been a major concern. Not only has it made for uncomfortably hot days -- 102-degrees in San Jose yesterday, around 89-degrees in temperate San Francisco -- we are always on the alert for wildfires.
