breast cancer: Why I advocate for Susan G. Komen - My Super Hero of Breast Cancer - 05/07/19 11:38 AM
I am a breast cancer warrior.  I am also a Political Bozo.  Which makes it a bit ironic that I was invited to travel to Washington DC last week to advocate to Congress for breast cancer.  Truth be told, I had to look up who my house representatives are.  How do you address them? And I'm still unclear if DC is actually a state!  Yeah... a political Bozo - first class.
How did this happen?  I am a breast cancer survivor - 14 years.  5 years ago I set a bold goal of raising $100K for Susan G Komen.  The Komen Foundation … (1 comments)

breast cancer: Why I Put My Hands Up For Hooters as a Komen 3-Day Walker - 05/21/16 05:11 AM
Now stop that.  If your mind immediately went to a tall bar stool, with bouncy babes in black shorts, you got it wrong.  I'm a Hooter, but not that kind. Think pink, instead.
As a 10 year breast cancer survivor, I have raise $4,000 to $7000 for the past 3 years for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day walk, walking 20 miles a day, 3 days in a row.  Yeah.. gruelling to say the least.  Last year I wanted to do more to bring about an end to death from breast cancer.  So I set a goal to raise a whopping $100,000. Nuts??? Maybe. … (1 comments)

breast cancer: Walking the Komen 3 Day San Diego - 60 miles in 3 days - What a HOOT! - 01/26/15 09:00 PM
This Thanksgiving, I hope to give thanks for my feet and my friends. I will have just completed walking 20 miles a day, 3 days in a row, through the streets of San Diego.  I picture sunny skies, 1800 fellow walkers wearing pink boas, sequined tutus, and men wearing balloon stuffed leopard print bras.  I hear it is one big 3 day street party as the San Diegoites come out to cheer on the Susan G. Komen 3 Day walkers with cheerleading squads, pink ribbon stickers, dogs in tiaras, and children holding clever signs -  "Save the ta-tas",  "Cancer Sucks",  and … (6 comments)

breast cancer: Why Was Walking 60 Miles Good For Business? - 02/03/14 09:50 AM
I started walking to get in shape.  And to support breast cancer research.  And because it sounded like a challenge. BUT I thought it would take away from my business.
Instead it ended up being GOOD for business!  How did that happen???
Last January I agreed to walk in the Susan G. Komen 3 Day walk in San Francisco - 20 miles a day for 3 days in a row. How will I do that, I thought.  And how will I find the time to train, while selling houses?  I work full time... and more!
But I was willing to sacrifice some business, … (28 comments)

breast cancer: Yep. I'm inspired by my 90 year old Mom. - 06/29/13 07:16 AM
My Mom's a trooper.  She's ramping up her one mile a day walk so she can walk the Susan G. Komen 3 Day in Seattle this September, ONE DAY AFTER HER 90TH BIRTHDAY! She's a frikken trooper.
It started with a tearful viewing of photos of my 60 mile walk last weekend in the San Francisco 3 Day.  "Sal, if I was younger I would have walked with you.  We need a cure." She cried at the thought of her sister Margaret, who died at 52 of breast cancer.  She cried again, talking of my brother Joe who died at 44 … (4 comments)

breast cancer: You'll be moved by this video, or you're already dead. - 07/23/09 02:01 AM
Many of you laugh at those who watch "So You Think You Can Dance".  But last night magic happened in a tribute to breast cancer.  If this doesn't move you to tears, you might as well pack it in.
This piece shows why dance has been the backbone of our communication forever, and can take you places mere words cannot. As a breast cancer survivor, this says what I felt, and shows the power, support and strength of my husband during that trying time. It's simply beautiful. … (11 comments)

breast cancer: How I Learned.... You can live with breast cancer. - 05/12/09 12:38 PM
Last Saturday I walked with my daughter in the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Walk for the Cure. Our team was A Lovely Bunch of Coconuts.  I'm in a pink shirt. I'm a survivor.  For me, it's been 3-1/2 years.
The day I got the call after my routine mammogram was a life changer.
I'm in the kitchen.  The phone rings. "Mrs. Dunbar, this is Kaiser."  Hmmm, why are they calling, this can't be good. "We need you to come in for a biopsy.... routine.... breast cancer.... percentages... blah, blah, blah...will next Thursday be OK?"
My mind went numb... head spinning. Reeling, to be … (11 comments)
