military: Why live in San Antonio, Texas? More like, why not? - 12/13/10 04:49 AM
San Antonio is one of the four Texas cities cited in a recent Newsweek article about “the Texaplex” in the best position for an economic upturn. More people relocate to Texas in search of jobs than any other state right now, and they head for San Antonio as well as Austin, Houston, Dallas. San Antonio benefits from its historic connection to the military, expanded manufacturing capacity, and a growing health care and biotech research industry.
It doesn't hurt that San Antonio also has a low cost of living; a mild, sunny climate; numerous universities; easy access to all kinds of outdoor … (5 comments)

military: San Antonio set to gain even more jobs, courtesy of BRAC and Fort Sam Houston - 09/11/10 02:19 PM
How many people are relocating to San Antonio to work at or around Fort Sam Houston in the next few years? It depends. The number could be as many as 12,000, comprising both military and civilian workers.
Whatever the final head count, the folks who move to San Antonio as a result of the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission consolidation will give a boost to the housing market for home sales, builders, and investors in rental properties.
Fort Sam, as it's known locally, is poised to be the center of the military's medical training programs. Brooke Army Medical Center, right next … (5 comments)

military: Drive-bys and how to handle them - 07/26/10 09:06 AM
I was inspired by a recent post about agents suspected of hiding homes from their buyers, instead of showing all the homes their clients are interested in.
Many of my buyers have never been to San Antonio, or at least only once or twice. They haven't had much time to search for homes on the internet before we set out to look at some, and they don't know the neighborhoods. Folks in the military being transferred to Fort Sam Houston, Lackland AFB, or Randolph AFB can be on a very tight deadline, too. Often, they have just met me for the … (40 comments)

military: How to send flat rate packages to our troops!! - 12/04/09 12:24 AM
Marchel has some great information on sending care packages to our service members at APO addresses. Also, she suggests you check out Soldiers Angels.
Another great organization is Any Soldier, which has a list of specific items the troops need.
Whatever your feelings about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, our men and women in the military are spending the holidays away from home and family, and would appreciate something to help them feel better about that.
Thanks, Marchel!

It is hard for out troops being away from friends and family during the holiday season.  This makes it an ideal time to send them a flat … (2 comments)

military: San Antonio real estate market slowing, but employment holding steady - 10/29/08 11:30 AM

Admittedly, residential real estate in San Antonio doesn't look as good as it did last month, with the pace of sales slowing 9.5% in September. The median home price dropped to $145,700 from last September's $147,700. This comes after several months of 1% to 2% appreciation, though, compared to other cities.  However, the economic prospects are good for a turnaround next spring.
Employment growth in health care and government, including the military, continues to help keep San Antonio's real estate market stable. The unemployment rate in September was unchanged at 5%. The job market gained 3,500 jobs, mostly "back to … (7 comments)

military: Ribbon cutting for AEF at Randolph AFB, Texas - 10/02/08 08:14 AM
The Air Force's deployment and personnel processes are being combined in a transfer of the AEF Center from Langley AFB in Virginia to Randolph AFB, just northeast of San Antonio, Texas. Earlier in the year, AFPC's readiness division and casualty matters division were combined with AEF operations to create the Air and Space Expeditionary Force and Personnel Operations Directorate.  The directorate seems to have met their goal of keeping disruption to a minimum during the transition. Tasks included readying the AFPC's infrastructure by migrating computer systems, rewiring networks, increasing bandwidth, and bringing systems online in the new location.

The ceremony on September … (4 comments)

military: New training facility opens at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas - 10/02/08 02:31 AM
Fort Sam Houston is the location for a new Army Medical Department Center and School's Center for Predeployment Medicine. The CPDM will offer training to combat medics, nurses, senior noncommissioned medics, physicians, and  their assistants and will cover everything from providing first aid on the battlefield to support in combat hospitals. Four courses that were previously spread throughout various departments at the AMEDD Center and School will now be offered by CPDM. Since the courses will now be mandatory rather than optional, and offered moe frequently, they will benefit from being administered through a single center.

military: Relocating to Lackland AFB? An overview of nearby San Antonio neighborhoods - 03/27/08 08:15 AM
If you're in the Air Force, chances are you've been to Lackland Air Force Base for basic training, but if you are coming to San Antonio for a longer stay, you might be interested in this overview of the local housing market.
Lackland is located on the west/southwest part of San Antonio, where for a long time new residential development has languished. Many of the neighborhoods close to the base were built in the 60s and 70s, before Kelly AFB was decommissioned, and prices today range around $50,000 to $80,000. These include Lackland Terrace (and other neighborhoods with the name "Lackland"), … (10 comments)

military: San Antonio is a buyer's market now - 09/27/07 07:49 AM
San Antonio's real estate market continues to run contrary to many of the large cities on the coast, and is still chugging along. Although days on market have lengthened from last year, and there are 33% more homes for sale, and prices are drifting downward from 25% appreciation levels in some neighborhoods, it has just begun to be a buyer's market. Rental income is still positive, especially with fewer entry-level home buyers able to qualify for admittedly dodgy mortgages. Forbes.com listed San Antonio as fourth on its list for home sellers; sixth for best overall housing markets.
The San Antonio Board of … (1 comments)
