Jami Mullikin is a friend from college that started his own marketing firm - Hill Mullikan. His web bio is simply - "My right brain is cursed by my left."

I'm a "fan" of his on Facebook and came across his blog post today - "How I use social media in 140 characters or less"  From his post.  Using the Twitter 140-character rule, he describes how to use many of the common social media tools:

It is hard to have a personal or professional conversation these days without facebook or twitter coming up.  In an effort to keep my message short and sweet, or twitter-style, I thought this would be an easy way to share how these sites have become part of my daily grind and why.

Facebook.com - Connect with 37 years of friends and family, remember how many things we all have in common and hope they remember me as a marketer.

LinkedIn.com - Connect with professional peers, share network...

I have tried that tweeter and still don't understand.  It just seems like a myriad of one sentence junk.  How can anyone make sense of it or get anything useful out of it?  Nothing is really being said.  I don't care if you are on the toilet right now, even if you are Mick Jagger.   Maybe I just need to learn how to use it more before passing final judgement.  Any thoughts?

Hi Brian - Twitter is all a matter of who your are following.  In Twitter, you choose who you want to follow and read updates about. If people are posting about walking their dog or shopping, then don't choose to follow that person.

For exampke, on our Twitter account:

You'll notice that all of our posts are either communication with our clients or links to articles and commentary about the real estate market. Every once in a while, I'll sprinkle in some personal stuff just for fun.

Find "tweeters" that are interesting and contribute quality content and only follow those people.  Hope this helps!

I guess I am just new, but how do you find "quality" people to follow?  I try typing in things I am interested in, and again, just a bunch of one line nonsense.  Maybe I just don't know how to read this new language yet?

Hi Brian - My suggestion would be to start with as few as 1-5 people that you know post good info and then look in their list of people they are following.  By starting with a good Twitterer, you can then use their work sifting people to follow to work for you.  Using our account www.twitter.com/altosresearch, you'll see that we mostly follow real estate professionals.  So you can look through our list of people that we follow, click on their profile page and do a quick check of the type of posts that they are making.  If you like what they have posted and think they'd be interesting to follow, then "Follow" them.

This is how I built my list.

Also, search for "Followfriday" - this is a fun thing that Twitterers do on Friday to recommend other people to follow.  If someone is being recommended, that's usually a good sign too.
