Real Estate Spammers on your Cell Phone-Oh No......

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with CELLing Realty CalBRE #01445865

A few days ago I was reading a very long blog from Randy in Hawaii.  He went back and forth with some of the Nigerian Spammers, and they were even calling him on his cell phone.....

In 3 years I have never had this happen, until today.  About 1/2 an hour ago I got a call from someone that stated they lived in Malaysia and found my number online.  He stated he wanted to Invest in Real Estate.......oh God, Randy's Spammers have found me.

I wasn't very nice when he asked me to help him-NO...click.  Just for your information the number that showed up on my phone was 0060163429407........, and I have removed my cell number from AR.  I doubt it will help now that I have been found, but I sure hope so.  It's sad as I am doing legitimate business overseas, and this just makes me want to delete every email or call I get that isn't from within the continental US.

Technology and Global Marketing is great most of the time, but for the bad guys it is a gold mine of new opportunities.

Don't forget about the telemarketers. I asked the last one how she got my number. She state off the Internet. I am thankful I can be found on the Internet, but I am wanting potential buyers and sellers to call, not a telemarketer.

I have placed my home phone on the "Do not call" list. It looks as if I will have to put my cell phone number on there too.

Michael,

Oh, I haven't forgotten the telemarketers, and they sure haven't forgotten me :) I have my cell on the Do-not-call list, but apparently if we use it for business they are allowed to call....

If you aren't getting a little telemarketing, you don't have enough exposure, IMO.

They aren't hard to get rid of.

Mike- I am used to the telemarketers, but after reading Randys Blog...I don't want calls at 2 am, 5 aam, etc from Scam Artists...so this call was something different.  Emails are bad enough, but stay off my phone!

Kathy,

I recently started turning the cell phone off at night.

It did develop a habit of ringing when I was trying to sleep.

This is why I don't post my cell number.  First contact can be made through my office line and then I may give you my cell number.

A few months ago, I went through the telemarketer ordeal.  I already had all my phones on the Do Not Call list, even my cell phone.  But it seems that the information we give out, even for ourselves like applying for a mortgage gets transmitted to these folks.  But what if registering your number on the DNC activates it?  Telemarketers get a report of those numbers that they are not allowed to call to stay compliant, but what if they abuse the list? It is food for thought.

I started getting calls from telemarketers on my cell.  The calls came from +09633 and similar numbers, always by a foreigner with an accent.  I tried to call them back to ask for removal. I asked them to remove my name, I asked for their Supervisor, I asked if I could have their address and phone number and call them back.  All I got was CLICK, CLICK, CLICK.  They even had the audacity to call me back 5 minutes later from the same number.  I wasn't just mad, I was livid.  Who do they think they are?  Those are MY MINUTES that I pay for!  Like receiving a collect call.  So I reported them (repeatedly) to the Do Not Call list, and the FTC.  To which nothing happened other than I got a copy of my report.  You can't even talk to a real person at the FTC, just file a report online.  My last act was to change my cell phone number.  AHHH..... peace and quiet at last!

Aleta-

Wow, and I thought I had too many calls.....yours sounds like a nightmare, and it is very frustrating when you tell them not to call, and they do, 5 minutes later as you stated. Isn't it amazing how many of them have learned how to bypass "the gate keeper" they sound legitimate at first, then you realize you've been had.......

I get calls from telemarketers frequently regarding internet leads.  I do the same thing at night now as well, the cell phone is turned off.  Great post!

Thesa,

Sometimes as you say we can't shut our phones off.  Did you give him a piece of your mind, or just CLICK.  Then try to go back to sleep after being agitated....these guys really have gall.  But for them business is business, and in Nigeria maybe they work on commission like we do :)

Open Home Mortgage- Thanks for posting, and enjoy your sleep.....they will be there tomorrow.

Yeah, you got that right. Definately a double edged sword. You want folks to be able to find you, but in doing so you leave yourself open to this opportunist morons across the globe.

You just have to keep your savvy up at all times!

Linda- I like the idea of flaging the calls, my problem is when they come up as Blocked ID.....I have many clients that have Blocked Id, so I would never get the call .  How do you flag these calls?

Robert-Absolutely agree.  One of our agents recently joined AR and previously didn't have an Internet profile.  This truely is a double edged sword.  Thanks,

Jim,

Good job, I hadn't even thought to Google the number.  Now the question is if they are in fact targeting us here, how do we get AR to put a stop to this?  removing my contact info is defeating the purpose of my profile.

I am lucky all my phone calls our forwarded from another service, so what seems like my cell phone really isn't and once I get a spam call, I immediately block it forever and they can never call my phone again.
