Go To School For New Prospects - Your Marketing Tip of The Week!

By
Real Estate Agent with Jaclyn Smith Properties

Ok, I know summer has just begun and the last thing on your mind is school. Of course, it goes without saying as the neighborhood expert, you possess a wealth of knowledge about the local elementary, middle and high schools in your service area - right? Have you met the principal or any of the teachers at the elementary school? Probably not, unless you have your own children attending school there. Why not take time before school is back in session and pay a quick visit to a school and stop by each class room and introduce yourself. By the way, it's always a good idea to "check-in" at the administrative office and state your reason for being there and ask permission to meet the staff. Of course don't go now - nobody will be there unless it is a year-round school. Try this in late August when the teachers report back to their classrooms!

So What's My Real Reason For Visiting The School?

Glad you asked! Unless you have "walked a mile" in a teacher's shoes, you may not realize what a tough job they have. Some feel their job is the most "under" appreciated profession on the planet (and under paid)! So when you make your visit to the school, let the principal know you are the Neighborhood Real Estate Expert and you would like to show your support for his staff by recognizing a member of his team each quarter with a small plaque and gift. In addition, you would like his permission to provide a "Survival Pack" that contains the following items:

  • pens
  • pencils Jim Dolanch School Information
  • paper
  • note pads
  • sticky notes
  • band-aids
  • highlighters
  • letter openers
  • nice hand-written note of appreciation
  • and anything your creative mind can think of to add

And don't forget your business card too!

"Flash in the Pan" Marketing Never Works!

So you take this creative marketing idea and you run with it! Remember this, singular marketing events fade to black but repeated impressions build trust. I love how Mariana Wagner's Community Picnic was a Huge Success. But she has big plans for August. She and some of her newly acquired partners will be sponsoring a Community Yard Sale! And following that event we can expect Mariana to be involved in another marketing strategy and another.... You see marketing isn't a one time event but must be part of your total "Marketing Plan" that includes repeated events and strategies to build your "Brand Identity" in your marketplace.

So What Will You Be Doing In Your Farm Neighborhood?

  • Why not sponsor an ad in the school's year book
  • Create a page on your blog and your website for that "Teacher of the Quarter" and include a photo
  • Partner with the PTA
  • Include your service partners for more cost-sharing opportunities
  • Sponsor a field trip to your office on "Career Day" or ask to come in that day and tell the kids what you do
  • Have your office help maintain the playground equipment
  • Each school has a "fun day"...ask to be a partner and provide a healthy snack or other item

Great idea, Bobby.  As the PTO President for my kids school, we actually try to reach out to the parents who are in the industry to see if they'd like to distribute school calendar magnets with their info on them. We have another agent who gives away free movie passes with a local discount theater to kids who read a specific number of books.   It's actually been very well received.... hmmm ... just an idea.

Calie - Great to hear others have tried these strategies and succeeded!

Treci - Happy to hear from you and appreciate the comment.

Kimberly - Tough markets sometimes challenge us to try new marketing strategies (that aren't really new)!

Stacy - If a RE Service Provider is to be perceived as an expert, makes sense to be tightly connected to one's community.

Ray - Keep your marketing plans fairly simple and attack one school at a time. It will also help you stretch your marketing dollars too! Marketing is a marathon not a sprint, so implement your marketing plan as if you were eating an elephant....one bite at a time. Ugh! Who ever thought of eating an elephant was one sick puppy! :<)

Kate - Glad this idea resonated with you.

I look forward to everyone's blog post on the results of your efforts to implement these ideas! If nothing else, you are sure to create a tremendous amount of goodwill!

Great advice! I just recently had an experience with a mom moving from out of state with 3 children. I showed a house for the listing agent in my office because her buyers agent from another town did not have time to show it to her. She was very concerned about the schools in our community and had a lot of questions, wanting more than the average student per pupil ratio. It struck me how important it was and how much it meant to her that I honestly could answer those questions because I actually know the teachers and principal of the school district she was looking to move to. Her agent she signed with may sell her a house initially, however she asked if she could call me to follow up with more questions later about schools. A new friend made and I bet when she gets to know new people here and they mention selling or buying she will remember me.

What a great idea. Teachers have a difficult job. some parents think their kids are perfect and do not like to hear anything bad about their kids.

Melissa - Sounds like you are the neighborhood expert...great job!

Sandra - The simple things are often right in front of our eyes....we all need better "vision".

Gita - No doubt about it....let me know how your efforts turn out!

FYI..the genesis of this idea occured to me the other day as I was reading my small town newspaper(everyday 7am ritual...coffee, check the crackberry for emails and read the paper at the local Panera). There was a small article in the paper annoucing a Realtor had received a special recognition for completing a certification...just above that article was an announcement that the local Chamber of Commerce was gathering to collect complimentary school supplies for the students and teachers at the elementary school. It was inviting local businesses to join-in on supporting the school. I simply put 2 and 2 together.

Subscribed to your blog, loved the idea of teacher appreciation, and book reading programs.
I will be placing an remeinder on my Palm to start gather/distribution of supplies in Mid August.
Idea just hit me.  Have to push the Seniors in the area to identfy the local elementary school on the grocery stores 'Apple for the Students' cards.

I am a home stager, and kicked off my business this spring.  Most people in my area aren't familiar with staging, so I am constantly investigating ways to get & keeping my name out there as well as make people aware of the benefits of staging their homes.

So, what I am currently doing is contacting local libraries and vocational schools who hold evening classes.  So far I have 2 libraries and one school scheduled and I have only just begun making calls.  I don't have a class itnerary yet, but I offer to send them my marketing materials so that they will have an overvieew of what I do and offer.  I am finding that most places are right  now scheudling for fall, so don't wait!   I will be posting a blog soon, which will go into this idea more in depth.
