When I was a young girl, driving to and from various communities in Sacramento county, usually meant having a significant amount of agricultural or raw land in between settlements.
However, the suburbs built in the 1960s until present day, have filled in the county landscape. It is becoming more difficult to locate ground zero of each community's beginnings.
Brighton School, was built in 1869 in the little town of Perkins - in the vicinity of today's Sacramento Rosemont community (along Folsom Blvd - near Watt Avenue).
The town of "Brighton" was another Sacramento settlement closer to downtown Sacramento than Perkins. An old gas station still stands on Folsom Blvd. Between 65th street and Power Inn Road (across from California State University), bench-marking where Brighton existed.
In 1924, Brighton School was moved from Folsom Boulevard, to its present location on Bradshaw Road at Lincoln Village Drive. It was renamed Edward Kelley School.
In today's world, Edward Kelley School continues to be a working school house, with hundreds of pre-schoolers having attended there at one point or another!
The building has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The original district dates back to 1858. You can click on the Sacramento County Office of Education link to view other historic schools existing during Sacramento County beginnings.
