Historic Edward Kelley School in Sacramento

Edward Kelley School
(one image - no slide show)

When I was a young girl, driving to and from various communities in Sacramento county, usually meant having a significant amount of agricultural or raw land in between settlements.

However, the suburbs built in the 1960s until present day, have filled in the county landscape.  It is becoming more difficult to locate ground zero of each community's beginnings.

Brighton  School, was built in 1869 in the little town of Perkins - in the vicinity of today's Sacramento Rosemont community (along Folsom Blvd - near Watt Avenue).

The town of "Brighton" was another Sacramento settlement closer to downtown Sacramento than Perkins.  An old gas station still stands on Folsom Blvd. Between 65th street and Power Inn Road (across from California State University), bench-marking where Brighton existed.

In 1924, Brighton School was moved from Folsom Boulevard, to its present location on Bradshaw Road at Lincoln Village Drive. It was renamed Edward Kelley School.

In today's world, Edward Kelley School continues to be a working school house, with hundreds of pre-schoolers having attended there at one point or another!

The building has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The original district dates back to 1858. You can click on the Sacramento County Office of Education link to view other historic schools existing during Sacramento County beginnings.

Maria - There were years when Edward Kelley School fell in decline.  However, during the 1970s there was a significant restoration project put in place, which saved the day!

Tony and Darcy - I like that they use it as a working school house.

Karen - I think so too!

Amy - I think it is cute too!

The history of old buildings and homes is so interesting. Can you imagine, that many years ago, moving this building from one location to another. It was probably the event of the day back then. Amazing.

Hi Myrl, I love the old school house and the fact that it is still in use.  Sometimes those old buildings disappear as civilazation creeps toward them.  I'm glad that the historic buildings are preserved.

Martha - I never had an interest in history when I was a kid, but it is a primary interest now.

Mary - I love that it is still a working school house.

Myrl,

I am glad that this beautiful historic building is preserved and still being used for the same purpose as it was initially.  Very beautiful building!   Thanks for sharing this one with us.

Hi Mryl,

What a great post. Your interest in Sacramento history and the wonderful posts you do, help ensure these once significant parts of a community's history are preserved through your illustrative writing.

I did notice that practically right in front of this wonderfully restored school's entrance is a street light and directional signs. I suppose it suggests that one could turn right or left and even drive straight into the school parking lot. But if you look at the arrows on the driveway of the parking area, they would seem to contradict the message given to the drivers approaching the school.  just saying, lol

Gerry - It's neat to have it used in its original purpose.

William - The sign was added during the 1970s when a significant amount of development encroached on the area, which had more of a rural presence in the past!  I tried to successfully photograph without the sign, but couldn't make it work!  Then I realized it is what it is.  Resisting "progress" can sometimes be futile. . .LOL

Hi Myrl,

Our Board EO used to say that all the time until I started to mimic him and just about everything was met with that phrase. With your comment back, it was je ja vu, too funny. But good memories all.
