A Moose Visit to the Beartooth Nature Center in Red Lodge, Montana

I enjoy giving private guided tours at the Beartooth Nature Center (BNC): www.beartoothnaturecenter.org

After one of my most recent tours, I stumbled on a plush toy moose (feel free to come up with a name for him) and decided to show him around the BNC.

When I presented him to Rudy, the mule deer, this was the reaction.

Moose and Deer

How cute?  Don't you agree?

When I presented him to Clyde, the coyote, this was the reaction.

Moose and Coyote

Scary, isn't it?   [PLEASE SEE MY COMMENT (#17) BELOW THIS POST]

My friend the moose ran away and went hiding somewhere safe.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this short virtual visit of the BNC thanks to my friend the moose.

Here is the lesson for the day:

MOOSE and DEER get along while MOOSE and COYOTE do not get along (at least not from the coyote's point of view).

Have a good MOOSE MONDAY and a great start to the week!

Gerry, I'm not sure I like the look on the coyote's face. I think he was looking for an early supper.

So what were you smoking over the long weekend Gerry???????

I think maybe you have missed your calling as a children's book writer??

Malcolm,

You may be right.  Although, he just got fed before I took this picture, he might have still been hungry.

Jenny,

Let me assure you I was not smoking anything.   The only smoke was in the sky with the fireworks.   I could see myself as a children's book writer.  However, I would not use a photo like that of the coyote as I don't want to scare the children.

Tony & Darcy,

I wonder if you also would have picked a nice bush with pretty flowers to hide in.

Paul,

I will admit it is hard to believe it is July 5th.   I am glad I reminded you of Moose Monday.   You reminded me that I need to come by and get my motivational quote of the day.

I'm hoping you took that coyote picture with a zoom lens or something. Seems way too close to him for my tastes, especially since he seems to be a little upset.

Jim,

That is as close as I got.  He sure was very territorial and because he tends to be mean to his sister Bonnie, he is in a separate enclosure that is right next door from Bonnie's enclosure.   Disclaimer: Please don't try to get this close.

Gerry - Plush moose was very bright and cheery with Rudy the mule dear but he turned rather pale when Clyde the coyote.  It took me a while to find him amongst the flowers and tall grass but I see that his colour is returning.

It doesn't look as if Clyde plays well with others...

Marc,

You were very observant to point that out!  The different color tones of the moose just add to the story.  :)

Michael,

That is why he is contained by himself in his enclosure but he is not as mean as the picture may suggest.  He is just not very social.

For everyone who came to this visit this post,

I just used the photo to dramatize my story.  The photo of him shows that he is a wildanimal (as all animals at the BNC are) and people should keep their distance and obey the following sign prominently displayed at the BNC on the animal enclosures.

"Wild Animals"Sign at the BEartooth Nature Center

Despite keeping my hands out of the enclosure at all times, I will admit that I went too close for the comfort of Clyde (not just because of the moose) and he clearly showed me his territorial behavior.   I was trying to capture some good photos for the BNC as a volunteer (no one should attempt to get that close in the presence of wild animals even if they are behind metal fences!).

I don't want everyone to judge Clyde by the single photo above.  So here are a couple of other photos (the good photos) of Clyde showing a gentler side:
