Englewood Dam Ded. Plaque

Englewood is the home of one of the five dams that were built after the flood of 1913 that covered Dayton's downtown area.  It is a thriving suburb of Dayton and Clayton's closest neighbor.

The Englewood dam is an earthen dam and US route 40 (the Old National Trail) goes right over the top of it.  Of course, since the construction of I-70 there isn't nearly as much traffic as there once was.

Englewood has approximately 6.5 sq. miles of  incorporated area and much of this is in parks.  Definitely a residential community the with a population of 12,235 (U.S. Census 2000).  Englewood shares a school system (Northmont Public Schools) with Clayton, Phillipsburg, and Union.  Northmont has excellent schools earning an Excellent rating from the State of Ohio for the last 10 years.  Of course, close to my heart, Northmont has an exceptional Athletic Department and better yet a consistently great football team.

Jack and Izzy - For those who can remember certain metropolitan areas before dams were built, we have a great appreciation for their creation.  As a kid, I can remember Sacramento flooding every few years, and causing significant damage.   That was greatly alleviated by the building of Folsom Dam.

I don't remember the areas before the dams (wasn't here), but the pictures I have seen of the flood and the damages sure demonstrate the need for the dams.

So why did people from Miami go all the way there to build a dam?  Couldn't the local beavers have done it just as well...?

The local beavers were busy with the other 4 going in the area.
