For 2011, it's back to the basics!

Hi all: I will wish you a fantastic weekend in advance! I've been thinking about last year and how I wanted to really step it up for 2011. For me, it's back to the basics in a big way! Part of me was recently inspired by Brian Buffini. Quite a few of you probably know who he is. I attended a seminar by Brian a couple of weeks ago. What's remarkable about his approach is he never wavers. He teaches the same stuff (sometimes with a different twist) and it works.

2010 was just ok for me. I made the same amount of money as in 2009 on less deals. With 2011  projected to be down in mortgage volume (total originations are pegged at $1 trillion which is less than the 1.4 trillion done in 2010) I think we have our work cut out for us.

What I've decided to do is go back to the drawing board. The bottom line may be less time spent here and on other forms of social media. That's not to say that it's not important to be here. But I think we all need to look at how we spend our time and what the results are from it.

For me, I hit the ground running right before the New Year with a series of meetings with realtors, CPA's, builders, etc. I think that will be my focus for this year. So far it appears to be working. I've had several positive conversations and it appears I have several deals in the works. Here is my plan for 2011.

1) I plan on working my database more. Either through phone calls or face-to-face interactions, this will be my main focus

2) I will continue to market via email and snail mail to my database.

3) I will continue to attend networking events but will be much more intentional about which ones I go to. Last year I think I went to one too many and it may not have been the best use of my time.

4) Social media will still be part of my plan but will only be dealt with after accomplishing the above.

So how are you doing so far this year? Some of the real estate professionals I know are off to very promising starts. It's funny. This business can wear on you but, for people who stay the course, better times are ahead. I wish you well this year. You can do it! Just get back to the basics!

Paul, I was scheduled to listed to Brian's Crushing It call yesterday, but missed the opportunity due to a conflict. Sounds like it resonated with you.

Hi Paul,

Getting back to basics is an excellent idea.  I would, however, not cut out social media, but would continue to embrace it and get known for giving good advice and answers.  This will help position yourself so that others will refer you as someone who knows what's going on and gets things done.

Hi Paul - I had to re-blog this one because I couldn't agree with you more.  You really hit the nail on the head with this one.  Thanks for the post.

Lanette: Thank you! That's very kind of you to re-blog. I wish you well this year!

Jeffrey: I like your thoughts. One of my favorite mediums used to be Zillow. They had a section there called Answers and I liked trying to answer the customer's questions. I like your advice. Thanks!

Vickie: Brian makes so much sense and then we don't listen! Go figure!

We all started with "basics" and it worked, sometimes we stray too far.
