When Mother Nature decides to give you the day off….. Atlanta Blizzard of 2011!

Atlanta Blizzard of 2011 - Winter Photo by Michelle Francis, Buckhead RealtorSometimes even when you have activities planned, Mother Nature has other ideas.  Originally, I was taking buyers out today for Tim Francis Realty to continue our quest to find them a good home.  For the first time in as long as I can remember in my nearly 30 years in Atlanta, the weather news was clear, concise and CORRECT 48 hours in advance.

Atlanta received 5-6 inches of snow last night into this morning and then has seen some sleet or freezing rain on top of that.  Not a big deal, well, honey you don’t live in Dixie if you are saying that.  Atlanta (and most of the south) barely have any snow removal equipment or staff.  This amount of snow is practically a top 10 snow weather event since records have been kept in Atlanta.

Atlanta Blizzard of 2011 - Winter Photo by Michelle Francis, Buckhead RealtorEven better, we’ve just enjoyed the beautiful snow.  The kids have literally been outside last night at 10pm and all day long today.  Life is good when you can enjoy a beautiful view that you don’t see everyday.  The joy of a new snowfall and being able to sled down a hill when it’s a rarity is just cool.

Looking for a home is important, but one would be absolutely insane to be out in this weather – few streets are plowed, and it’s just not safe.  The only neighbor I’ve seen leave the neighborhood is an OB-GYN, now that profession doesn’t get a snow break.  I know Tim Francis Reality will be back in the business of showing homes shortly and that’s ok.

Life is good when Mother Nature decides to give you the day off!

What do you do when Mother Nature gives you the day off?

Michelle, We love snow days.  We may not be able to show, but we can still work the phone.  We tend to find many more people home during snow days.  Captive audience - yea!

Hi Michelle, mother nature blessed us with a day off here in Charlotte, NC as well.  It started snowing here early this am and has been snowing all day.  The freezing rain is to come next.  I agree with you...stay off of the roads.  Stay warm and safe!

Michelle come on up to New Jersey, you'll have lots of snow days off. Actually, here we don't take off we just wear heavier boots. I'm waiting for someone to say "it's a sunny day, take the off".  Love your pictures.

Michaelle, I spoke to my client who live in Atlanta. She says it's pretty much locked down. I'm waiting on paperwork from her finacial guy, and I was just asked to give them a few days because the cant get to their offices(?)

P.S. I'm working from home today, wearing shorts and a sweater (Love those AZ winters)

Jim & Linda,  Yes, we've done accounting, e-mailing and other office work.  This is in between making batches of hot chocolate and getting pictures of kids playing in snow:-)

Judith, We are going to be blessed with tomorrow off, too and temps look like it could be a whole week here!

Maria, I know about snow days in NJ.  We lived in Watchung when I was an 8th grader.  We had 14 snow days by mid February when I found out we were moving to south Florida.  I got teased by all the other kids, how would I get a day off school living in Florida - they joked - only if the AC went out?

Barbara, Glad you are enjoying it.  Everyone here is thrilled we'll get another day tomorrow too!

Brian, I do have to share that I have never seen the video of the Interstate Highways almost all closed or with no real traffic to speak of... as we are seeing right now on TV news.  This might go down as a storm of the century, as it's going to be cold all week.  Typically it gets warmer 12 hours after we have snow and it's melted and gone.  Who knew?  Good luck getting it closed.

All the best, Michelle

Michelle--I had to chuckle when you said at the beginning of your post 5-6 inches, not a big deal--unless you're a northerner.

As you know I live up north and our kids don't get snow days unless it's 15-16 inches, but they love a snow day just as much as southern kids.  Love the nighttime photo of kids playing in the snow.  Enjoy the rest of the week.

Mary,

I know, but 5-6 inches is like 5 feet in the north.  This is the worst I've ever seen here, as far as even the Interstate Highways haven't been cleared, so you know all the secondaries are horrible.  It could be a long week.

All the best, Michelle

Sounds like you used this opportunity to take some time to smell the roses or play in the snow :)

Hi Michelle, Doesn't new snow make everything so beautiful? Your photos are pretty. I'm scrambling here to get things done because we are due for a huge snowstorm. Now I'm hearing 12-22"!

Renee

Still doing so, might be a week.  That and organizing and I should be well ready to take on the world next week.

Jackie,

Our major issue is the freezing rain after the 6-7 inches of snow.  We now have a few inches of ice on streets.  Major highways are CLOSED and many are only slightly drive able.   Good luck in dealing with this strong storm.  It's the fastest snowfall accumulation I remember in a while.

All the best, Michelle
