Paralysis By Analysis- How To Make Yourself Crazy Until You Make A Decision.

So I got broken  glass stuck in my fingers a couple weeks ago.  It's in a bad spot - right where my fingers bend. It's bugging me - so talking with the doctor he says, "You can live with it or we can cut it out and have the risk of nerve damage, etc.  Go home think about it let me know."  Ahhh .. let the Google-ing begin.

Some things in life are black or white, and easy to make decisions about. Other decisions take a little more thought - and other major decisions take even more time.

Decisions are usually solid and right or solid and wrong! No matter, if you wait until absolute certainty you may end up doing nothing or end up driving yourself crazy by:

  • Getting hung up on your options.
  • Getting lost "paralysis in analysis" - or exploring too many options.
  • Then there is not enough analysis - you can't decide because you don't know enough.
  • Then when you know enough, you start over-thinking;  having too much information is confusing and you might miss the obvious.

So how do you decide when you can't decide? I don't have all the answers but some simple things to start with are:

Trust your gut.

Forget thinking that everything is perfect and that you have to make the right decision. Nothing is perfect and you won't always make the right decision.  And in those cases...

...learn from the past -- think back about past decisions and outcomes and make a different decision this time around.

Quit talking yourself out of something your gut is telling you to do.

And once you make a decision, accept it, be positive, embrace it and manage whatever the outcome.

And what did I decide about the glass in my fingers?  It's being taken out today!

Best wishes. That's the decision I would have made, rather than wondering forever if it would travel, should I have had it removed, etc. Let us know how it goes.

Like a band-aid - just rip it off and move on, quit thinking about how much it will hurt.  Once off you can begin the healing process or be pleased with the results.  Good luck with the finger!

GOOD MORNING GABRIELLE! That is the decision I'd make as well. I'd also have a more confident Dr. do the removal then the one that forewarned you he may leave you with nerve damage.

I obtain all the facts and figures. Then, I ask other peoples opinions in the matter. Then, I make a decision. I stick behind my decision bad or good.

Gab - I find that going on to sites like WebMD just make me more confused and nervous. Getting opinions from qualified experts is always good and in the end, I think we all make decisions that we are comfortable with. Good luck.

Gabrielle - you're right making a decision can be hard.  But we have to trust our instinct and move forward.

Everything is in limbo until the decision is made, then action comes into play and things can move forward.

Hope the finger is on the mend!
