Santa Cruz, CA isn't called "Surf City" for nothing. Besides all of the surf competitions held here, such asbeginning surfers the Duct Tape invitational or the Jay at Maverick's, people come from near and far to just spend one day at these amazing beaches on their board. Even my assistant confesses to needing to learn how to surf well just because she lives in Santa Cruz. Rather than thinking someday or maybe tomorrow, why not now?

Although the cold winter waters of Santa Cruz waters and high swells are daunting, this city is host to many more diverse surf schools then somewhere like say, Hawaii or Panama. And it will be a nice break for the week of work to come to Santa Cruz and learn from a professional all the great spots, maneuvers, and etiquette of surfing. After you make the plunge and give it a shot, you'll see yourself making the effort to get back out again. I feel as though it's a way to recharge my batteries, adding exhilaration to my life rather than a regular 'work out' from the gym.

Even though you may think of surf schools as a summer activity for the kids, it's a nice break from reality for adults as well. Some surf schools include the Richard Schmidt Surf School, the first surf school in Santa Cruz that has been helping beginners since 1978. Another great one is Club Ed International Surf School, started by Ed Guzman after he had worked in the army as the program director of outdoor recreation teaching fellow army members to surf. Cowell's Surf shop, right outside of reknown wave spot for beginners, Cowell's Beach is another great place to learn. There is a saying about Cowell's that "Everyone starts at Cowell's, and everyone ends there too". Other great places to learn are Santa Cruz Surf School and Surf School Santa Cruz.

Come and give it a shot! You've got nothing to lose, except for your board if you don't put the leash on :)
