New Matthews I-485 Interchange Proposed at Weddington Road
A second Matthews I-485 interchange is proposed to provide more access to the growing town of Matthews. The new exit is to be built at Weddington Road, just beyone the Siskey YMCA. The project is known as a STIP, Statewide Transportation Improvement Program, and bidding will begin in 2012. The cost of the project is estimated at about $21,681,000 and has been funded by the State.
This new exit (proposed Exit 54) should provide quicker access to I-485 for thousands of drivers who are currently using the exit at Providence Road (Exit 57) as well as the John Street, Matthews exit (Exit 52). As well, the new exit should relive much of the traffic at both Exits 52 & 57 during rush hours and allow for timelier emergency responses.
Concern from area residents, that perhaps the new interchange will add more traffic to what is already a congested area, is growing however. Widening of Weddington Road would be required to accomodate the exit. More to come as the bidding takes place for the project.
