Why we are becoming an overweight nation.

washer and dryerToday: I throw the clothes in the washer and dryer, fold or hang and I am done.wash board

Back Then: I had to go draw water from the well, gather wood for a fire, boil pots of water it to get it hot. Rub clothes on the wash board with soap I made from Lye, rinse and wring them out one by one. Hang on a clothes line to dry, then removed the laundry from the line, and iron.

Today: I can drive through and order a friend chicken dinner and all the fixings. chicken dinner

chicken     Back Then: I can to go out and catch a chicken, kill it, clean it, cut it up. Heat up the grease on a stove I have loaded with fire wood. Boiled potatoes that I planted and plowed, to make mash potatoes with butter and milk I got from the cow. (of course I had to make that butter) Of course I had to make the biscuits from scratch, and my pie is from the fruit I picked off my fruit trees. Any other meat meant raising it or hunting it and dressing an animal out. Guess what, no refrigeration back then.

Today: I jump in the car and run to the mall.

Back Then: I had to get the horse and harness it, hitch it up to the buggy, and head off with no air conditioning horse and buggyor heat at probably a top speed of maybe 8 miles and hour. I purchase the cloth to make our clothes, and purchase the bare staples of things I cannot make or grow.

Today: kids are in front of the tv, on the computer, playing games and for a rare few, sports in school.

fishing  Back Then: early to rise to feed the animals, gather the eggs, walk to school, play ball or whatever at recess, walk home from school, help with the chores and do homework. Gather water from the well for drinking and baths, no radio, no television, no video games, and neighbors can be miles away. Maybe a little fishing on the weekends.

Get the idea? Not really that we are lazy or we over eat all the time...but the inventions to make ours lives easier...have made us larger.

Hi Sherry. It's actually nice to see posts on Active Rain that aren't always about real estate. And the ending was cute.

Sherry, I got a chuckle out your post. At first, I was thinking the same thing as Gerard.  Loved how you tied it in to needing a larger home. lol

Gerard-Actually when I was small, my grand parents had no in-door plumbing, so I remember getting water out of the well, grandma boiling water so we could take a bath...Grandpa killing a chicken for dinner. Teaching us how to get the eggs from the chicken house, and how to avoid the bull in the field amoung other fun things.  By the time I was in High school, they had enclosed their back porch, had a bathroom, washer & dryer, and running water to the house. They lived deep in the south, but I learned so much from them.

Steve- what would you do if no more electricity was available?

J.A.- I have the same condition!

Rob- Thanks! I get tired of reading about real estate all the time too.

Pamela-Thanks! Our next house needs a bigger shower stall... LOL!

Ah yes, I remember my mom and grandma doing all that.  How easily we all forget what it was like before computers and cell phones.  No wonder every one was so skinny back then.  I should try that to lose weight and do less of my real estate work in front of a computer.  :)

I'll stick to the tread mill and keep my washer and dryer. Nice segue though.

While I'm sure exercise can help, I think one of the bigger issues is actually food additives and preservatives.  So many of the prepared foods have little if any food value while affecting the body's natural metabolism.

I was never over-weight as a child and knew VERY few who were because we walked or rode our bikes EVERYWHERE * friends' homes, parks, etc. That does not happen now
